    XFX 6800GS or HIS X800XL?

    Hi again all,

To go with the new LCD that I am planning to buy near the end of this month, I thought that I could also do with a new AGP graphics card to upgrade my current 9800 Pro.

I don't really want to go the socket 939 route just yet (system spec on the left), so I am looking for a half-decent AGP card to tide me over until the A64 platform has matured a bit more (when dual-core becomes cheap )

I've got it down to two cards, one ATI and one nVidia and I don't know what to pick (price difference between the two is negligible):

XFX GeForce 6800 GS Extreme Edition 256MB (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/6800_Series.html)
    and
    HIS Radeon X800 XL (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/X800_Series.html)

How do these two stack up against each other? I am kind of leaning towards the 6800GS Extreme but is there a clear winner? (I mainly play FEAR/UT03/HL2 and others).

Thanks for any input into this tough decision!

Well I was thinking about 160-180 (could stretch to the HIS X800). I was looking at the powercolor x850 xt pe on overclockers, but I thought that £290 inc vat was a bit excessive... otherwise, I couldn't find many x850 cards

yer soz mate i thought it was agp i think your best bet would be to find a 6800 gt as they are better than both of those cards for less

    edit

if iu can strech to this or find one on ebay or somewhere else then do it as thye own the gs

I had an HIS X800XL (PCI-E) till recently - excellent card and played HL2 at 1600x1200 with no problems. On top of that it was quiet and didn't need an external power source. Also had an XFX 6800GT and that was a nice card as well - not much difference between them in real terms.

Don't buy from Overclockers B list - I bought an X850XT from their B list that arrived unboxed in an RMA bag with half the cooler missing. It was returned immediately yet it took 6 weeks and the threat of legal action to get a refund.

Well here's hoping , they've managed it before, but I guess that there's still a lot of orders left over from Christmas.

Watch out - XFX AGP extreme not shipping yet

I ordered a XFX extreme from Komplett, received yesturday and its not the extreme version but the vanilla. This is a known problem with a packaging mix-up. Look here http://www.xfxforce.com/forums/threa...rt=15&tstart=0 . It appears from the product number on the Scan site (PV-T40B-UDF3) that this is a mere standard card in an exteme box. The real extreme cards have (PV-T40B-UDD7) model number but apparently haven't left the factory yet. Fantastic

That sounds just great... that's all I need

Will have to see what XFX says about this (wait for their reply on their forum).

edit: I just double-checked on scan, and they even quote the vanilla product code under the extreme edition as helios246 said. Order cancelled... I can wait a bit longer...

scan state the clock speed of the xfx 6800gs is 485, this is the extreme speed. If they ship a card clocked lower than this they have made a mistake and should replace it with the correct card.

edit: hmm.. well they do in product details, but not the specifications...

hmmm, I've just seen that they have a XFX 6800 GT for sale too - wouldn't this card be better if I could get it clocked it to Ultra speeds?

I think the gs-gt are as near as makes no difference.

The GS overclocks better than the GT I think, as the best GTs were siphened off into ultras. If they were the same price I'd go with the GT, but if there was more than 5 pounds in it I'd probably get the GS.
