i cant comment on the other two brands, but i can suggest you avoid the xfx one for the moment mate, the xfx line is that there is nothing wrong, but their own forums say otherwise. the ones that are in stock at scan are the "E" models and they have a number of problems with the fans. they also have a 4 pin molex connector instead of the pci-e connector.

Indeed a bargin, but being an Ati boy for the last year part of me wants to stick with them and whack up the aa and the other part of me says give nVIDIA a whirl! I think I'm looking for a factor that will sway me to one more than the other....back to google

What makes you think you wont be able to run aa on a 7800GT?

From what I've gathered the X1800XL is more adept at implementing aa and af than a 7800GT at higher resolutions, with higher fps? Also with high performance in games with very complex pixel shaders?
The other reason I'm leaning towards the X1800XL is for the potential for lower noise levels.
Am I spliting hairs? It's just a lot of money to me and I don't want to fluff this decision.

I bought two of the Gigabytes to run in sli mode. Nice cards, cheap & overclock quite well.

nah go for the gt its probably a better card imho better drivers as its been around longer plus unless ur playing like quake 4 or fear at high res they wont be much differnt and actually they wouldnt be in fear as they wouldnt run it with aa and af enaled lol but yer they are bout the same give nvidia a chance.

Remember that even the flagship X1800XT only have 16 pipe, with ATI atm at least the lack of pipeline is compensated by the architecture and the clock speed. I would go with the 7800GT though, i think's it's more silent than the X1800XL

I have an XFX 7800GT Extreme, and other than the damn fan (it always runs at high speed) it's an excellent card. It seems many 7800GTs have this problem (XFX do seem spectactularly in denial about the issue though) but an after market quiet fan is only about 12 quid anyway.

When I was looking for a video card and browsing the reviews, The Gigabyte ones seemed to get marked down slightly for various things. Nothing major, but in a market where things are so close anyway, small differences can count. After seeing the comparison reviews of the X1800 and the 7800GT, I'm still certain I got the right one.

you could try lowering the fan speed using rivatuna

    killkoy,

it doesnt work, thats why people arent happy with them. the fans are stuck at max speed and rivatuner or any other software wont change it at the moment.

and the worst thing is that when people do manage to get xfx to issue a replacement card, they are being replaced with refurbished cards of the same model. as xfx dont acknowlege any fault, they must be sending out faulty replacements as well. shoddy!

ok im off my soapbox now
