    7800GT or GTX

Managed to fry my 6800GT so Im moving on to the 7800 series and was looking at either the 7800GT or GTX versions.

Does anyone have any bench marks for these cards and perhaps opinions on which is the better card overall ?

The 7800 GT should hit around the 7k at stock on 05, might be worth having a look at the gto2, same core as the xt and unlocks to 16 pipes, my old gto2 hit 6600k on 05, 535-590 could have went higher, I dont know about the new gto2 but they supposedly come with 16 pipes unlocked already

The 7800GTX is the better card, but not by that much. If you are running 1280x1024 or less there is little difference between the cards. If you run 1600x1280 or higher the difference is more substantial.

Get the GTX if money is not an issue. If it is, the 7800GT is a good (sometimes great) deal. The GTO2 is a very nice card and an incredible value, but it is not as fast as the nVidia cards you are considering for DX9 gaming.

my 7800GT hit 6846 at stock, so I didnt bother overclocking it, the card Peforms really well.

HL2: Lost Coast and BF2 look amazing on 1280x1024 with high detail, and I bought mine for £200!

I honestly cant see why people would want anything more powerful.

My (noisy) 7800GT Extreme happily grooves along at 7300 3DMark05s (7700ish if it's pushed, but it doesn't need to be). Even with everything maxed out, I haven't found a game that is anything but smooth. The GTX will probably get you 140fps in Far Cry rather than 120fps or whatever, but you should really have the frame synched anyway to avoid a tearing image. I really don't see the point of paying twice the money for 10% extra performance.

You asked the question, so here is the answer:

The GTX is the superior card. Obviously. It was nvidias flagship until nov 05. It is still bleedin good. £270ish from scan.

The GT is better value, it only lags slightly behind the GTX, and is around £200 from scan. (on a good day)

If I were getting a new gfx card, I would have problems choosing, but the longer I left it the better, the G71 is out very soon.
