    Rma

Card is about to be removed and will be sending it back to Scan.

I have given up trying different things to see if a software issue. Anyway if I can find out what was wrong with the card from the RMA team at scan then I will post to let you all know.

    Thanks for help

    Problem

    No Problem:

Running XP Home Service Pack 1 - fully updated.
    Daewoo 19 inch TFT
    Microsoft wireless KB and mouse
CoolerMaster Centurion Case two fans (one replaced with a CoolerMaster Aluminium Fan)
Asus A8N-E Motherboard - BIOS from CD - never flashed - defaults on all settings
HDD 1 - Western Digital Caviar 200 GB - IDE
HDD 2 - Running NT - WD Caviar (from old IBM Krakatoa) IDE
PSU is a Tagan 480W Modular EasyCon U-15
    Memory 2.5GB Crucial
    NEC 4500A Dual Layer DVD-RAM
    Sony FDD
Two ASUS PCI devices supplied with board - USB Bracket 2.0 and Game/ Midi connector
Front and rear panel headers connected.
    HP Printer and Stereo Speakers

Re-installed Windows exactly as above and no-change. Partitioned HDD at re-install.

Card has been in machine less than a month - hardly used for gaming at all. I got the gear before christmas - the entire build is brand new apart from the 2 HDD's. All components bought from Scan (apart from HDD's) on the same order.

I ordered before christmas but never built until after new year as we were away and wife had a baby on 17th.

    Problem:

Scan have tested twice on an ABIT Rig and there has been No Fault Found

    Paid £7 to return
    NFF Fee is approx £24

So any savings I made from Scan are now eliminated, fair play they have tested but I have a card that has cost me a few bob and won't work.

When I get it back I will completely remove all apps to another drive. Re-install XP and get SP2 installed. Then we will see what happens.

BTW what XP version are you running? Thanks - gd luck with your RMA

I have heard some reports of a 4 colour problem due to AGP drivers interfering. Obviously not a problem with your setup, but I do recommend flashing your bios to a recent version and having a quick look at the gfx card settings in the bios setup. Check for recent motherboard drivers as well.

    that is bad bad news.

did u try resetting cmos? taking out pci devices?

    im runing SP2.

i have returned my gfx card but now i have to face paying the return fee because it isnt faulty.

    im really annoyed now

edit* also what was the software which made all this happen....which u have since removed.

edit2* how far do scan test? would they try installing the drivers etc or just see thatt he card outputs a signal and then assume it is fine?

I take it you've done all the basic things like making sure the PCIe connector is firmly plugged into your GTX?

That solves that 1 , 59 to go...

Thanks for posting again Davos, good to be kept up to date. It will be interesting to see what happens when you put the 6200 in the slot. As you say let me, and the other users that are interested know what happens.

If it works - then what? Will you really be able to get something done about the 7800?

BTW did you send the 7800 to XFX?

Well, on the brighter side at least you can identify the mobo as the issue (at least it would seem that way). I have yet to run any tests and I will not get my card back until next week sometime, so I will have to test then.

The annoying thing for me is that if I have to RMA the mobo that's another few quid in postage and takes more time. But the most frustrating thing is having to re-build the PC from scratch.

I took a chance on the ASUS board - won't do so again. Previous was an MSI - and I think, if I can that I will head back there. You may have said before - what is your mobo?

Have you tried knoppix? Someone else recommended it and I am going to download when I can get online an burn a copy to CD/DVD.

    i have a dfi ultra-d

try something for me when u get a working gfx card...

open winflash, and in the boxes on the left try to tick the pnp sector tick box. mine wont allow me to tick it. that seems to point to some irq error, but ive tried everything possible as far as IRQ goes.

my display adapter shares an irq with USB 1.0 control and networking. can you check yours?

doesnt seem to be a power issue either.

onlyt hing left is mobo, but im tempted to let you return yours before i try mine, as i dont have the money to buy a new one atm.

    *sigh*, what a ****ty problem

Thanks for the update mate. Will check when card back. BTW if you help me solve this one I will contribute to your funds towards a new mobo if you do need one.

I seem to recall checking IRQ's in BIOS and not seeing that any are shared....however will dbl check that next week.

well in theory they should be able to share IRQ's easily, however ony when PNP is enabled. now, sue tot he fact that i cannot flash the pnppart of my bios, i am led to believe that this is a problem somehow. unfrotunately, because i cant install drivers, i cannot manually assign the gfx card IRQ, hence a vicious cirlce

and your offer is very kind, thank you

    Calling Magic Wand

I have emailed PC Zone's Phil Wand for help on this - may make it into the PC Zone March issue which is due out on the 15th February.

Unsure if I will get an email reply - time will tell.
