Best graphics card for AGP on a budget

I'm looking at replacing my Radeon 9800 Pro with something a bit quicker.

I don't want to spend wads of cash on the card because I'll be going PCIe at some point (just not right now). The budget I've got in mind would be something like £150 including the VAT and delivery.

    The options...

    Radeon x800 or x850 variant
    I can get a x850 Pro for 135+VAT, a little over budget.
Numerous x800 variants are available within budget.

    Geforce 6800 variant
6800 cards come in well under budget
6800 GS do these exist for AGP
    6800 GTs are too expensive.

What would anybody recommend? Can somebody explain what all of the Radeon x8xx variants are and which is best value, assuming it falls inside my budget.

Checkout Toms Hardware VGA charts for an idea on performance:

I am looking at the XFX GeForce 6600 GT 256MB to replace a 'failing' 9800 XT (it supposedly has 6800 performance).

    Overclockers.co.uk sell them at £120+VAT+delivery.

The 6600 GT doesn't seem that much faster than what I've got right now. In fact, the Halflife 2 graph shows the 9800 Pro faster than the 6600 GT at 1024 * 768. If I was happy with the performance of the 9800 Pro and needed to replace it because it had died, the 6600 GT would be on my list for potential replacements but I want something faster.

There are some x800 GTs about that can be made into x800 XTs via a BIOS flash they seem to be difficult to get a hold of though

i think waht you want to get if you can is a leadtek 6800 AGP, huge success rate in modding to 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shaders, can be had for £150

or a x800GTO2 , musthave the 2 at the end, easy mod to x850xt also about £150...
althoug im not 100% sure they made an AGP version....

    could try this

Sounds good, but does anywhere have them in stock and cheap?

I don't think the GTO2 AGP exists. The GTO2 is R480, and R480 is PCIe. AGP isn't very well catered for.
That GTO only has 128MB, I think I need 256 Mb really, or at least I want it. Will that make a big difference?

hmmmm scoured the usual suspects... cant find much in AGP for your budget.
the x850pro is a good card but only 12 pipelines i think.

i reckon you should wait a couple more weeks, there is a 7800GS coming out in AGP, this will either be in your budget or force the AGP cards you cant afford down in price... just a thought, use it, dont use it.

That sounds like a good plan!

But I can't wait, so I've bought a second hand 6800 GT off ebay, cheaper than a new x850 Pro would have cost, in fact its closer to the cost of an x800 GTO once you've paid VAT and delivery. All being well I'll be getting muchos high res FPS in Call of Duty 2.
