Angry Where to find a ti4200

Where can you get a cheap Geforce4 ti4200? Whenever I go to online stores, all they sell is fxs and mx440s. If anyone knows a place to buy them, please tell me!

Oh, and if I do get one, just how long will it last me? I don't care how a game looks, just if it will run smoothly at lowest graphics settings.

Well 4200 are about as fast as Rad9600PRO or GF-FX5600ultra so in terms of raw perf they certainly have lastability ... esp if they o/c well. Of course you lack DX9 but I can't see games coming out refusing to work with DX8 since so many people have DX8 cards (or even DX7 with GF2/4MX). So there's no problem there, by the time DX9 is really needed you'll find the pure speed of the card insufficient really ... depending how techie / fussy you are. The other big things you'll miss are AA+AF ... GF4TI can do them and 2xAA only takes a small hit. AF on the other hand though pretty has quite an impact on perf. Still you can play a LOT of older games with 2xAA+4xAF and have the pure power to play most games without AA+AF and with a decent res and details.

If you can find one and can live without DX9, AA+AF and top 3D perf (eg Rad9700-9800) then they're very cool cards. If nVidia continued to produce the 4200 I doubt many people would buy the FX5200-5600 ... they're getting hurt enough by the Radeons!

If you can stretch to it and can still find them get yourself an Albatron Ti4680 Turbo card

Take 1 Ti4600 PCB (complete with regulators etc)
Add 128MB of ultra fast 3.3ns DDR memory (606MHz stock speed)
Finish off with a Ti4200 core

Result ?? = A Ti4200 card that can out run 4600's when overclocked to 315/690 (core/clock) and will do this all day long.

If I wanted an ati card, which one would be about the same performance as the ti4200? I've seen a radeon 9200 going fairly cheap, how good is that (I have absolutely no experience with ati).

If all else fails, i'll probably just get a radeon 9600!

Ummm... Richie, how do you put on a 4200 core on a 4600 pcb? Buy the 4600, cut out the chip and solder on a 4200 core?

Can you just maybe cut out the mem on a 4200 and solder on some 2.8 sammy?

Have I had too much coke again?

Anywayz, getting the 9200 now is a bad idea methinks. I think I had a similar discussion with Austin regarding the 9600 - i thought it was a real bargain, but you really and to get a 9600 pro (flip chip or something!) for a little bit extra.

But I say that if you can get a 4200 on the cheap then go for it. Just one question for the more knowledgable : I hear that the 64 mb 4200 had better mem than the 128 ones - so is it a btter option to get the 64 version and pump serious voltage thru the chips or go with the 128 one?

Rad9200 are way slower than the GF4TI4200, they're inferior to the FX5200 and the 4200 keeps pace with the FX5600ultra. If you can't find a well priced GF4TI then the next logical step is a Rad9600PRO ... even the 9600 (nonPRO) is inferior to the 4200 in pure 3D speed. 9600PRO is certainly the way to go and should easily exceed 9600XT speeds. The origianl non '-8X' 4200_128MB did have slightly slower RAM but the extra RAM easily made up for it so either card was a great buy. Modern 4200 should all have the faster clocks.

silentphoenix it is true that soem super-enhanced 4200's were produced that used the 8 lyer 4400/4600PCB and used fast BGA RAM (instead of 4200 TSOP). These cards were as good as any 4600 because essentially that's what they were when o/c'ed. The only real diff was that manu's put 4200 core on there which only had to run at 250mhz not 300mhz of 4600. Since almost all GF4TI core's achieved 275-310mhz it was a good deal.

I second that, I ran one of these cards before upgrading to a 9800 pro , thought it was an excellent card, overclocked very well also.
