I do like the idea of having the reverse layout - would certainly aid cooling a lot.
Still slightly unsure why it wasn't done before...
I think its inviolation of the ATX form factor, although I think that they have realised noone cares if it allows silent operation, I just want to see it happen with cards with active cooling next, so the air gets blown out of the case instead of onto my soundcard
The only issue I can see with that solution is that it might obstruct some of these big coolers like the TT BT (dependant on Mobo layout of course). I like the idea of silent though.

Maybe it would be a good idea for people with SLI setups as I'm sure loads of people have had cards in a system where the coolers have blocked various other PCI/PCI-E ports.
Now imagine the top PCI-E card in the SLI with the "reversed" cooler on the card and the bottom with with a standard cooler - bliss for getting access to all the expansions in the middle of the 2 main PCI-E slots.
or the other way around - with the inverted card at the bottom so you can now use all your PCI slots when using SLI :)
I would love to be able to use all my PCI slots when using SLI, maybe sooner I will be able too now.

Pretty good for passive cooling but I think the design on the X1900XT cards is the way forwards, even less heat in your case as it blows the air out directly through the adjacent PCI slot blanking area :)
Erm, nothing is on the back of my card, apart from the heatsink bracket, lol. Ramchips are the only thing on th back of a card, and modern 512mb cards have it all on top.Quote:

Passive cooling is ****, it's proven. unless you have a room at like 10C and a case with masses of airflow, a simple fan/heatsink is always better.
The point is that this card isn't like yours. Most, if not all, of the heat producing components are on the back / top of the card, allowing the heat to convect away more easily.Quote:

Yes, but presumably it breaches BTX specs as well as ATX.
