8600GTS or 7900GTX

I need a graphics card for my new build, but as there will be new models coming out in the near future I don't want to get a high end model. Will be running Vista64. Given the inavailability of X1950XT cards this leads me to the 8600GTS or 7900GTX.

Which do you think would be better?

If you don't need DX10 right now (and you can live without it since you intend to upgrade in the near future), the 7900GTX would be the faster card.

What sort of games are you playing and what is your screen res.

I'd be tempted to get a cheaper card which could be relegated to a HTPC or something later on

I play a mix of things -FPS/RPG/RTS, at 1600x1200 res. DX10 isn't essential for the moment. I did think about the 8800GTS, but at £170 for the cheapest (vs £92 for the 7900GTX) , i'm not sure its worth the extra.

ooo where you getting the GTX for £92? I thought you meant the £117 one on scan

Yeah go for the 7900GTX the 8600 won't give you playable FPS
