7800 GTX and CRT monitor problems

I recently got a new built system with a PCI 7800 GTX. Everything works fine except when I plug in my CRT Compaq P1210 monitor using the adapter provided. On my 19" TFT the picture is crisp and clean but on the CRT there is a slighy shadow on everything. The same CRT functions perfectly on my old ATI 800XL PE at all resolutions. I have tried playing with the settings but cannot find a way of adjusting it.

When I go onto 'advanced timing' setting and select 'interlaced mode' the shadows disappear albeit the quality seems to be reduced and the display looks grainy and with subtle lines.

I am not an expect and would appreciate some pointers about how to set up the card as though a process of elimination I am certain that I can adjust the setting on the graphic card to make the display smoother and clearer.

I've found the image quality slightly decreases on my CRT if I have to use a DVI->VGA adaptor. If you're using one of them make sure it's screwed down really tight, and if possible look for a high quality one - I don't know if you can get gold plated ones, but I would recommend doing so if you could.

Otherwise try a range of refresh rates and see if that helps.

Would the adaptor account for the shadow on screen?

Well... the 'experts' at Maplin inform me there is no such adapter.

The first things I tried were the latest drivers fot the card, monitor and fiddled around with every combination of resolutions and refresh rates possible.

As the monitor I am using is pretty decent (P1210) and it worked fine on the old PC with an ATI 800 PE, surely it would work on a 7800 GTX?

My screen used to shimmer, all the text, with my 7800GTX and CRT. A high quality cable did the job, but i couldn't install monitor driver after that.

Ive got a 3mDVI-VGA cable, high quality belkin, i could sell you, if you needed it.

Without trying to be pedantic :-) ; what do you mean by 'shimmer'? My picture is steady but there is a shadowy blur around text? Smokey, did you get gold plated connections? Anyway - how much?
