    256MB 6800XT vs 512MB 7300GS

Finding any info about ether has been a nightmare, so i thought i would trouble all you nice people with it

which one would be the most useful for gaming and which one will be "good" for a little bit longer then the other (if that makes sence)

Thanks for taking the time to have a look.

You'd struggle to find ANY reason to buy a 512MB 7300GS.
Honestly, a 128MB is probably enough but 256MB will definitely allow it space.
That said, it could be that the 512MB you have seen is infact a 'shared memory' do-dad, what's-er-name, turbo memory thing, and not 512MB on-board. Still not needed though, as ANY game that you would benefit from having the 512MB, there is no way on earth the 7300 processing power could get more than a frame a second in it.

As for the 6800XT, it's a cut down version of the 6800 (8 pipes on board instead of 12). Still has the 256-bit memory though, which matters.
The general concensus so far is that, by and large, the 7300 is a bit better than a 6200. A 6800XT will be better than a 6600, maybe even a 6600GT (depending on the game).
Get the 6800XT if they are the same price.

The 6800XT is £80 more expensive (from where i have looked)

And yes the 7300 has the "super power drive turbo mega memory"

Also would like to add, would there be much point with have this, 2x 256MB GeForce 6600 LE SLI Configuration??? or would i be better finding an extra £105 for a 256mb 7800 GT ???

I have been playing with the idea of making a card out of lolly pop sticks and duct tape.

Crikey - £80 more!! Not worth it - the 6800XT should be about £80 in total.
Tell me what your budget is (approx), a bit about your current system (processor and RAM at least, and if i am right assuming PCI-Express), together with what exactly you want to do with it (ie what game do you like best).
I will post links of a few good options for you.

Ok, well here are 2 links to seriously good value graphics cards:
    NVidia's Geforce 6800GS 256MB
    ATi's X850 Pro 256MB
Both of these could be regarded as last years technology, but both are very quick and will last a long time. I prefer the 6800GS, but they are similar.
My genuine advice is to forget about SLi - it really is not good value for money.

One final thing - the 7800GT cards from nVidia are a proper step up again from these two above, Scan selling one here for £199 although it does blow your budget.
This review at hexus shows how much better a 7800GT could be over a 6800 GS though, often 50% better, and your system would certainly handle it (ie feed the graphics card enough data to let it breathe).

Any of the above will play all current games at good resolutions though, such as your 1440 x 900. Enjoy!
PS Be sure to check out Widescreen Gaming Forum! Hexus is great, but WGF have some specialist help for gamers.

I agree with Misc you would be better spending the extra £20 and getting a 7800GT as the rest of your spec deserves a good graphics card. If not go for a 6800GS as these can be overclocked to high speeds (485 to 500 core).

for the ching ching u paid for that D920, a 3800X2 20 quids more would have brot u up to above 930 level.. probably even teething a 940 in some cases.

But then again, overclock that 920, for apparent reasons its supposed to be much more overclockable than previous 820s..

Your Intel stock cooler should bring u up to 3.4ish without problems.. thats pretty much a 955 without XE (HT)... but bear the noise, Intel stock hsf sound as loud as hell at full speed...
