Realistic Benefits of 512mb over 256mb.

Another thread by me i know, im going to be ordering a 1800XT today or tomorrow, and im unsure which memory flavour i should be buying.

Ive seen a 512mb one for £259.99 and ive seen a 256mb one for £30 Cheaper at £229.

Im going to be running it through my dell 3007WFP so get some more performance in games, and i want to do it now becuase i think the price of my 7800gt will fall as soon as the 7900s are released.

Most of the games i will be playing are NFSMW, HL2, CSSource and LFS.

So is it worth the extra money for 512mb?? I can just afford the 256mb one, but i would pay the extra to get 512mb.

    Thanks

If it is the 512mb gtx then it is worth it due to higher clocks

If you have a 3007 which I think is the big Dell 30" tft? Then it's definately worth the extra 256mb as you'll notice a difference at super high resolutions with the extra RAM. It's only not really worth it if you were to have a 19" TFT that can only do a max. of 1280x1024

    Agreed with the above.

The 256mb GTX struggled with 1920 x 1200 on me 2405FPW, but the 512mb managed to play

    How is it?

    My 7800GTX 256 would not play at 1920 x 1200

The 7800GTX 512mb did manage to play at those resolutions. Like: answering the question

And I even clocked down to similar speeds just for example

Doom 3 + Quake 4 uncompressed textures on the 512mb card

The GTX 512mb is a much more powerful card, comparing the 2 is stupid, because there not the same card, with different memory sizes.

The extra memory doesn't make that much difference, but for 30quid, you might as well get it, and its always nice to have it for the future.

I disagree, the cards are still relatively similar, the 256 version is still an extremely fast card, but a mini really isn't an extremely fast car, even for mainstream. But yes, there will be differences at higher resolutions certainly.

Interesting? Both cards were exactly at the same speeds, and everything else was the same?

Be cool to see the results. Id imagine anything less than 1600x1200 and 4X AA would be no difference, except in FEAR.
