Radeon 9700 assistance
The fan on the card is failing so thanks to advice given ive bought a Vantec Iceberg cooler to replace (not arrived yet).
The question i have about this is. Since the new fan will have to be powered externally, Do i still need to power the card with the external lead ?

I'd power it externally, my boss had an 8500AIW and as the fan failed it was pulling the power on the board down to the point that altho the card worked it was as slow as hell in 3d apps, replaced the fan and powered it from an external cable n its fine again now....

Short and sweet thanks for that.
Apologies for what might seem a stupid question, just didnt want to fry my card.

afaik the card won't even boot without the extra power cable

I dont think he meant the additional floppy type power cable, he means the cable to the fan on the GPU...
-
Well i was asking about the card power (floppy connector)
But i take it from what you've said [GSV]Trig that its a bad move to power the fan from the GFX card itself.
Will make sure i plug them both it separately

fan should be fine powered from the card
