Is it worth upgrading to a X850 XT PE from a 6600GT

I've just seen a Foxconn X850 XT-PE advertised for £153 inc VAT. Is this a good price?

Is this worth upgrading to from my 6600GT?

    Cheers.

Yeah, it would be a decent upgrade, if you can sell the GT for about 50quid.

If you have the funds, for an extra ~£50 you'd be looking at an even more powerful 7800GS AGP or 7900GT PCIe.

What is the rest of your system?

Yeah, I saw that thread. Is the performance gap between an X850XTPE and a 7900GT that massive? To be honest the X850 made me thing I could save a few quid (being tight in other words).

Were talking 25% more money, it's alright saying spend the extra 50quid, you can then keep saying that, and say get a X1900, or somet.

    Is this PCI or AGP?

If you're looking for the best bang for buck and still not spending too much then look at the Sapphire X800gto2. It can be modded to an x850xtpe with a 100% success rate and is 2/3rds the price of a 7800gt but has ~80% of the performance.

    At Microdirect for £122

Well... more like a X850XT and a 100% success rate, my core gets stuck at 515.

Still amazing for the money though as you can push the memory to well above XTPE speeds, so it kinda evens things out.

Im moved from 2 * 6600 gt in SLi to an x850 xt pe and never looked back and that was before they were really cheap. Its an excellent card and you wont regret it. Plays games like FEAR and quake 4 no problems.

There is a lack of sm 3 of course and the fan is a little bit on the noisy side but other than that I cant fault it.

Well I'm going to go against the trend and say it's not worth it.

I mean, yes, technically it is worth it for games like FEAR and HL2, and if you pretty much exclusively play these titles (or that generation) then it's worth it. But otherwise you're really going backwards in terms of technology, but forward in terms of speed.

The killer is tommorows generation of games (starting with something like Oblivion in a week or so) which will take advantage of SM3.0. Now it could well be that the 6600gt is too slow to run them anyway, but for sure you're beginning to miss out on features if you go with the x850.

If you really have to upgrade the 6600gt then the cheapest upgrade would be a 6800gs, but all this would do is bring you to the level you can play the games just about to come out. A much better upgrade would be to the 7800gs type cards, where you will really see a large difference from the 6600gt, or alternatively wait for something like the X1800GTO if it's in a form you can use.

hardly any chance if u stick with AGP.. Don't get a wrong idea.. I was so against PCI-E until i noticed that there isnt much choices left.. 7800GS is a terribly crippled card, the X850s are powerhouse living in an.. well.. old house..

Better bet is to get one of those 7800GTs.. They're going cheap now.. just a tad more from wat ur paying for a X850XT.. You're using an Asrock, so migrating woudnt be as painful..
    Me want Ultrabook

Yeah, beginning to think that the 7800GT could be the route to go. Shame the deal from LOW on 7900GT's seems to be gone now though! Ah well, better get saving.
