    G80

Im not fully up on the graphics card market and was planning to buy the 7900GTX when amd's AM2 comes out. But now i've noticed something - now am i wrong or is this card just a small step trying to drain the last bits out of directX 9 and DDR3 with the next major step that everyone is REALLY waiting for being the G80 with its supposable directX 10 compatibility and DDR4?

Does anybody know a likely time we will be seeing this G80 on sale (judging from past release to next release) or is it just something they are planning to do but isnt even in the development stage yet?

Its just i dont want to wait until June (when i was told AM2 should be coming out) and buy the 7900GTX only to find the G80 is coming out the month after.

    Thanks in advance,
    Chris.

Seriously don't worry about the G80 until very late this year Check this also I would be looking for this around June time
So to answer your question don't buy the G80 or 7900GTX in June buy the R580+ or X1950XTX or w/e its going to be called (that card will be stupidendously fast until G80/R600- which will both be DX10 compatible)
    Hope this helps

hmmm, looks like R600 or G80 will be my next graphics upgrade, Quake4 is still runs smooth to my trusty x800xt ( and the only game im going to get any time soon is Quake wars!!)

yeah i already read that at inquirer, but didnt get what it meant..."misses out tape"?

Well to be honest i could even wait til October if i had too...the thing is, i do 3d animation at uni and my final year starts october and ill be doing my final project which will be very graphics intensive (way more than games as obviously ill have no restrictions on poly count etc etc) so anything that will speed up the real time playback speed of my scenes and whatever is definately something i need even if i have to wait. Just noticed inquirer says fall release maybe, so ill have to see, and hope they dont get pushed back.

No real point in investing in a DX10 card when they become available until Vista ships. If you do, you are paying a premium for a feature set you cannot even use.

Hmm i assume the g80 will have other improvements/advacements over the 7900GTX and the like right? I mean i wasn't thinking of buying it just because of the dx10 compatibility...plus, this card will have to last me quite a long time, so i guess buying a card that is compatible with vista would be a wise choice. As i said before i cant wait until vista is out either, since i need the new card for October. Thanks for the info tho!

Well just like all new gpus it will be better than the last and i think that it uses ddr4 which should be quite fast.

I had the same dilemma but in the end just went for a 7900GT. Thanks in part to the very helpful people on here. It's plenty fast for now and will hopefully do me for a year or so. Hopefully I'll get a few bob back on it when it's time to change, and I'm sure I'll get my moneys worth out of it.

I was very wary about buying a new system at all because of Intel NGMA, AM2, Vista, DX10, R600, G80 etc. It's just the nature of the market that there's always something big just around the corner.

I know if I waited for the next gen cards that when they finally came out I'd be saying to myself "just hang off, these are first gen DX10 cards, wait for the next batch, now THEY'LL be the ones you want" or something very similar ! By then I'd have denied myself a year of quality pc gaming which I'd quite happily pay a couple of hundred quid for. Which is the cost of the card

haha very true Ill just have to see....if its later than October ill go with a 7900 but if its before then i think i can hold out! Just once i get this itll have to last..as i wont be able to spend 100's on a card when im at uni, or just after when im trying to pay back the riduculous student loan lol.
