Just my guess as I don't know too much on the subject but...
Not too sure it makes much difference. If your going to be watching DVD's on your PC full screen then any program will look the same I think.
I think it all depends on the decoder you use, I just have an Nvidia Decoder one, and watch all my DVD's through Windows Media Player. I know its not the best program to watch DVD's, but it uses the Nvidia Decoder, and I am familar with the software.
Mind you, if I am wrong and can get better results with other programs let me know. But, I did have WinDVD, and found the quality to be the same and the interface annoying as I was not used to it.
So if your familar with PowerDVD, stick with that.
K-lite codec pack comes with its Classic Media Player which has a nice simple interface, plays a very wide range of video files/disc types and is very configurable. It is available from free-codecs.com I believe![]()

nVidia codec is by far the best I've ever seen/used. Setting up for surround sound was a bit tricky though.
WinDVD is what I used to use. It was good, simple and did the job well.
I still just use a fairly old version of powerDVD. Not sure that upgrading would really make any difference, same old DVD format. But then i harld ever watch DVD's on my PC.
Purevideo decoder definatly has the edge on quality. Otherwise I find that powerdvd fine but a bit soft.
Yeah, I do quite fancy PureVideo. It's just the price which puts me off a bit at £30 for the Platinum version.
I know that's about average for DVD software and I wouldn't normally mind but Play.com are doing Power DVD 6 Deluxe for £7.99 at the mo. Seems a bit of a bargain.

Like others here I also use the nvidia codec and it works really well - I didnt havemuch trouble setting up the surrounds speakers though, I just used the calibrate tool that comes with it - worked first time. Compared to setting up my AV amp this was a doddle!
What we share with everyone is glum, and dark...
does that codec come on a mobo cd or something you have to buy? (the nvidia one)

You can buy them at scan or probably download it for a fee.

Power DVD for the win hands down![]()
Power DVD gets my vote too. Very easy to use and picture was excellent after I hooked up the PC to the TV.
if you have any driver cds that come with dvd drives check they dont have power dvd on, a lot do.
This uses my rule of the cheaper it is the better it is.
I so rarely watch DVDs on the PC but if i do its powerDVD
im a big fan of Media Player Classic myselfOriginally Posted by fredered
