Personally I'd get a 512Mb X1800XT...

good choice on the X1800, just make sure your psu/case cooling can take it.
I went from an X1800 (256mb) to a 7900gt and tbh the difference in performance is almost zero, 7900 faster at some things, X1800 faster at others. However when my conductive paint gets here from ebay im hoping to blitz the X1800 completely![]()
yer im in the same position, should i go for the X1800XT or the 7900GT! i would always prefer ati but the 7900GT has some awesome overclock features!!! hmm
the inquirer compared the two and they really are close! So im going with the X1800XT, isnt it true that nvidias cards cant handle anistropic filtering and HDR lighting?
no, threy can handle HDR, quite well infact.

Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 2.53GHz
Coolermaster Centurion 5 All Black
Corsair 450W VX 450W PSU
Samsung SpinPoint F1 500GB
oh right! I'm sure that nvidia couldn't do two things at once but a radeon
ive never had any experience with radeon, but i can recomend nvidia, they handle HDR fine, but the majority seem to think the x1800

Its AA (anti-aliasing) and HDR that the X1800's can do together but the 7900's cant. But it still works in source-based games as the HDR is implemented differently. Unfortunately the likes of oblivion and FarCry you cannot have HDR and AA on at the same time.
As i said ive had both (only got rid of the X1800 due to conflicts with my motherboard) and both are really nice cards. It basically boils down to:
Is the extra heat and power drain worth having HDR+AA at the same time? if yes - X1800
Are you confident enough to perform volt mods? if yes - 7900gt
Oh and if you generally play more OpenGL games the 7900 is better, although ATi's drivers are MASSIVELY improved from older versions.
if u play games like source then i would go x1800 as it looks sweet with AA and HDR on. and go omegadrivers.net for ur drivers, i get up to 30 fps more with these drivers on my x850xtpe

Ahh right yeh its suprising how nvidia cant do both, but the 7900 is significantly cooler! The XFX 7900GT (standard model) and the X1800XT how much could they be o/c with the stock cooler? As in easy peasy slide a slider up![]()
My X1800 went to the max the sliders would allow in CCC i.e 690 core and cant remember memory. My 7900gt goes to 562/1600 (without voltmods).
So both clocked pretty far. And just to make sure ive explained myself properly the 7900's CAN do HDR and AA in source based games like CSS, HL2:LC and DOD:S
Ahh ok, but not in Elder Scrolls things like that! Ok so the X1800XT it is for me!
Hopefuly this will be in stock shortly!

lol atomic, we are both going to be getting the same card and have the same mobo! how funny![]()
heh! good taste! erm what card are you getting then exactly? the gecube?Originally Posted by jackvdbuk
You know it may be worth saving a few pounds and going for the 256mb version if you play in 1280x1024 or lower, as i had the 256mb version and for the brief time i had it, it performed very well at 1280x1024. Wouldnt do ultra detail on quake 4 though (but breezed through doom3 ultra detail), but imo it looks no different from high anyway.
