radeon x1600xt vs Nvidia GeForce 7600GT

    Hi

Planning to upgrade my PC. Not sure which graphics card to get.

Just bought the latest edition of Custom PC magazine which has a large review of graphic cards.

I'm probably going for a dual core system (AMD 4200 most likely). Just from reading reviews i've narrowed down the choice of graphic cards to these two. I'll quote the end of the Custom PC review

"For £120 the X1600XT provides respectable performance for the money, but when you can pick up the superior GeForce 7600GT for £149, we think its worth raiding the piggy bank for that little bit extra."

Custom PC is geared towards gamers. But i'll mostly be using the PC for video editing and DVDs so not much gaming. The review of the X1600XT doesn't mention anything about ATI's Avivo technology. After reading these links

it seems that the Avivo technology is a boon for those who use their PCs for dealing with video and DVD.

This is a description from Scan for one of its X1600XT cards:

    "256Mb GECUBE ATI PCI-E X1600XT DDR3 VGA TV/Out DVI Retail:
ATI¡¦s Avivo™ technology connects to home entertainment devices and creates true-to-life image reproduction, and the smoothest video playback ever offered by ATI. Get high image fidelity with CRT and LCD displays, TVs, rear projection and plasma TVs, and projectors.
    - New ultra-threaded core 3D architecture with ATI¡¦s revolutionary Avivo video and display technology to drive performance to new heights with incredible speed and intense 3D graphics."

Must admit, after reading all this, still not sure what elements of Avivo are included with the card, ie is there specific capturing, mpg encoding software included?

So does anybody have any recommendations or experiences.
Which one should i go for or are there other alternatives.
Still haven't decided what the other upgrade components will be, but i cant afford to go for the dual card Crossfire or Sli options. So i'll probably get a motherboard that doesn't have that option.

    Thanks for any help.

use 'search' in the forum.. there's already a few threads discussing the advantage between X1600XT and 7600GT, I really can't be bothered as its the same question for far too many times.

If you plan on gaming, then the 7600GT is the better option. If not, then it really depends on the options provided and how they impact on what you'll be doing.

No experience with DVD editing, so I can't really comment further.
