An Evga 7900GT CO SC will have potetial for over-clocking even further and will be a cooler quieter solution out the box, although I think it is still slightly slower than an X1800XT series with AF and AA on; also 512mb will help for texture intensive games, such as Quake 4. You also get simultanious HDR and AA support with the red card.

I tend to agree with Ati's stand that future games will be more shader processing intensive than texture sampling as we strive for greater graphical realism, which is where the extra pixel processors come in handy.

Performance is near identical on all the cards.
The cheapest one would be my pick. If they are the same price then the X1800 because it has more memory.
Personally I went for an 1800XT because ATI cards run Oblivion better.

My X1800XT was really fantastic, but voltmodded my 7900gt is undeniably faster. There really is no need to buy a 7800gtx now unless its the 512mb version or your wanting a card to SLi, as the 7900gt is cheaper, cooler, overclocks better and is slightly faster at stock too.

And volt mod and overclock the X1800XT and it's faster.....

I can vouch for that. At my best 24/7 gaming clocks i can score 10.5k in 05, and my max is 11.5K. If i had water cooling and volts mods, well go figure.........

Sure the X1800XT overclocks good, very good. And yep at stock it is faster than the 7900gt, plus it can do HDR+AA if your into that sort of thing.

But when you voltmod a 7900gt and overclock it as much as you can, then do the same to the X1800XT, the 7900gt has more headroom and therefore ends up quicker. Im not dumping on the X1800XT, when i had the choice first time round i went with that and loved it. Overclocked to the very limits of the CCC sliders without even trying, but sadly my mobo has compatibility issues with it and i had to sell it on and get a 7900gt, and now from personal experience i can say that the X1800XT is faster at stock, the 7900gt is faster when overclocked to its limits. If it wasnt for my stupid mobo im sure id still be using the X1800 and enjoying it throughly.

Well I also plan on getting myself a DFi Lanparty Ultra D mobo and a 165 Opteron so overclocking my cpu is a must. As far as o/c the gfx card its not something I normally bother with but thats because I currently have a shuttle and that just gets too hot. I plan on buying a Antec Sonata 2 to house all of my new gear as I like my pc to be quiet. So from what the majority say I should go for the X1800XT then.
