    X1800Xt 256MB or 512MB - Help

Guys, now i am confused, just ordered a X1800XT256 yesterday for the measley price of 170 quid, running a dell 2405pw with a 6800GT till now and playing oblivion prompted me to make the upgrade, the GT just can't keep those lovely graphics going at a reasonable FR. Looking forward to great things when it arrives today...............but been advised in another thread that I would have been much better off with the 512mb version, can anyone quantify the difference for me. I play mainly WOW, BF2 and recentley Oblivion, I would like the card to keep me going for 6 - 12 months till I upgrade. I really don't fancy going through the grief of returning the card if I can avoid it, but also don't want to miss out on bags more performance for £50 more Please help

Well, dun let my words scare u off the £170 deal.. its a lovely deal.. really..

But no doubt, ghost recon will not run anything more than 1280x1024 if you do not have a 512MB card.. so is the high detail settings.. apparently the memory usage goes up to 350ish MB when u go 1600+ on high detail.. thus, the 512MB cards..

the rest of the games should run fine really.. you'll also probably feel SOME slowdowns on games like FEAR on high res like 1600+..

The X1800XT is a very powerful chip, so I doubt there's going to be any different unless you go thru those ULTRA settings in Quake and all..

The cheapest retail 512MB i can find now is the Powercolour one which sells for £260.. which is ALOT more than the £170 you're paying..

Scan used to have the Powercolour one on sale for like £230ish but its long gone out of stock..

End of the day, the £170 for me.. well, if I never had that 512MB... I'd get the 256MB variant anytime if it was that cheap then..

Just get the X1800XT overclocking tool and clock the living 'shyts' out of it.. I've heard with a VF900-cu.. most ppl are getting 750ish on the core and 1700ish on the mem..

That should smack a non-volt modded 7900GT (XXX edition or what have u) anyday of the week.. which cost as much as a 512MB X1800XT

I appreciate the feedback Sawyen, your words just put the evil green doubt monster in my mind. On a side note I overclocked a 9800Pro moons ago with out upgrading the cooling and over a 6 month period pretty much killed it, Is the Zalman the best solution for a safe overclock, or what is the arctic cooler like to your knowledge, it does look blimmin massive though from what I have seen. The big plus I have is that the CPu is watercooled and the system is in a CM Stacker so I don't have a big problem with heat. I wonder what will be best for OC/Low noise

Size? I think the Arctic Accelero is bigger than the Zalman.. not used any myself.. as I'm still stuck with stock cooling.. I just leave the fan running 100% when temps go past 65C to keep everything nice and cool.. I don't notice that much of the vacuum cleaner noise as I use a very very well noise insulated headphones..

My wife does complain as she can hear my X1800XT from downstairs..

Most ppl I know that owns a 7900GT are raving about how great it overclocks.. they're almost getting a stock 7900GTX with less 256MB memory.. but then you'll have to voltmod..

The furthest I went on my X1800XT was 700MHz/1600MHz (up from 625/1500).. and the stock cooler was boiling on Auto.. hitting around 90C during load... Getting it running 100% net me a nice comfy 75C during load..

In answer to your question, yes.. I think the Zalman is the best option available now..

Ghost recon will run fine over 1280*1024. If FEAR can run on my rig@1680 then Ghost Recon can.

apparantly the game automatically limits 256mb cards to medium textures if your using 1280x1024 or above. But i suspect there will be a simple .ini hack to overcome this. Like getting FEAR to run in 1280x1024 involved editing the config file.

Disappointed by the GRAW developers here, surely its upto us to decide what detail level we should play in, for all they know i might like to play at 10fps at 1600x1200 on an FX5200 (which i dont before anyone says anything).

The option is out of reach at the moment, Tweak Guides gave it a try.. but still a no go..

so no 512MB.. no high res..

no 512MB.. no high quality textures..

and its not limited to medium when u go past 1280x1024.. its more like ur not allowed both..

    pretty silly..

^ Thats stupid, surely it could handle it! I mean F.E.A.R has some extreme textures going down! They run fine on a 256

I'd just like to know where he's getting that XT for £170!! thats an astounding deal - I'm deciding between an XT and a 7900GT, which can be had for £200.

Bought delivered and running for 170 + p&p From o'clockers.co.uk. Would have preferred to buy it from scan but too much of a price gap

Only thing I would say is that you need to change the 'hairdryer' cooler!!!

if you get a crossfire master later you will have to restart every time you switch in/out of crossfire mode with the 256mb card (to enable/disable the extra 256mb on the master), with the 512mb you dont as the xfire master will be in the same memory config both in and out of xfire mode

    this will be required:
    a) i read that using xfire mode on games that dont support it actually gives a slowdown, although i cant see ytf ati wouldnt be able to fix that and they may have down by now

    b) you need to leave xfire mode to have more than one dvi output running

i would like to know about point a as im thinking about that kind of config (single now, xfire later when theyre cheaper) so if anyone knows, tia
