6800 GS or 6800 GT (AGP)

I'm either going to get this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...2E16814122195R

    or this:

    http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merch...ct_Code=190288

I'm a bit sketchy about the 6800 GT being a refurb, but I think I could get over it. If I get this 6800 GS I plan on unlocking and overclocking. How do they fair against each other?

The 6800gt is definately better for performance due to the extra pipelines compared to the 6800gs. Although you are right even i would be a tad bit skeptical when it comes to refurbished gfx cards. however leadtek are a good gfx company and produce solid cards. your choice at the end of the day

Even with the 6800 GS unlocked to 16 and overclocked a decent bit -- you don't think it'd compare to or beat a 6800 GT?

6800GS cant unlock.. that i am pretty sure.. but they do clock pretty high depending on manufacturer..

A leadtek one? Hmn.. then I'm guessing its one of those super A400GTs.. I had one of those, best 6800GT around.. high quality stuff.. really.. Mine, not long ago, gave me a healthy 430MHz / 1200MHz on stock sinks (those huge copper ones) and 450 / 1200MHz on 1.6V.. Those speeds are Ultra Extreme speeds FYI..

Go for the 6800GT but if you look you can find

512Mb Gainward BLISS 7800GS Silent 512MB AGP TV DVI
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=395715

    or

    512Mb Gainward BLISS 7800GS+ Silent 512MB TV DVI * N.B. 7900GT GPU on a 7800GS AGP Card !!! *
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/produ...oductID=395716

Both of which would be far better than any 6800GT or GS

I've just 2 days ago removed one of those leadtek 6800GT's out of my system, It has been faultless for the last 9 months, Great performance, Whisper quiet, Great build quality and
    cost me £200.

I have also heard as previously mentioned the overclock on stock cooler is excellent, I would check the warranty and go for the 6800GT or alternativley look on EBAY there are about 10 on the UK side (1 of them being mine!!!)
    Good Luck

Awesome! Finally, some informative replies, lol. Well, I'm definitely considering the 6800 GT now. I'd still like to know if a 6800 GS unlocked to 16 pipes and 6 shaders (which it can), and over clocked a bit -- would fare against a 6800 GT overclocked. Oh yeah, I suppose I wouldn't notice much of a difference from an overclocked 6800 GT and a 7800 GS? I forgot, I was going to ask, how much would it cost to get the Gainward 7800 GS and GS+ (respectively) with international shipping to the US?

Not true for the AGP 256MB DDR3 cards.
However the 6800GS pci-e and the new gainward 6800GS 512MB cards are limited to 12 pipes

The 6800GS AGP is the same card design as the 6800GT with the same NV40 chip, it's hit and miss whether it'll unlock or not but it seems the majority do.

I got a b-grade 6800GS from overclockers the other day (figured out why too, it was missing the thermal pads for the voltage regulator heatsink). Soon as I got it, I tried unlocking it to 16/6 and that worked great, then I overclocked it an it went up to a little over 400/1100 Now with a quick change of the card's BIOS, it's locked at 16/6 and 400/1100

Certainly compares well with the 6800GT now

But it doesnt make sense why they would use NV40 chips on the GS as I kind of recall them new 6800nu chips are fabricated on a newer, cheaper, and cooler NV42 core 110nm process, where the older NV40s are on the 130nm process.. well, if u have one that unlock.. hmn.. my bad then.. As I recall after a while no 6800nu unlock anymore, regardless AGP or PCI-E.. perhaps I was wrong. Either way, even if its true that its an NV40 chip, the overclock will be much lower compared to those newer NV42 chips.. 400/1100 seems okayish.. most actual GTs should breeze to those speeds fairly easily, I would be suprised if you cant hit 420MHz on the leadtek core with the stock HSF.. though I am not sure if they've duffed anything during refurbishment..

A 450/1200 6800GT will still be a tad slower than a 7800GS, I think... not too sure.. no one really had benchies for a 450MHz NV40 chip versus a 350MHz G70 tricycle (yes.. tricycle.. cs its crippled).. But I recall that all games 2 months back were very playable.. even FEAR at 1024x768 with most stuff turned max and 4xaa 8xaf.. Far Cry, HL2, HL:LC,.. bahh.. everything else should handle 1280x1024 with max stuff and 4xaa no probs..

The 6800 GS AGPs have the NV 40 core, where the PCI-E have the NV42 core. I can just assume that a 6800 GS AGP should overclock exactly the same as a 6800 GT (after thinking about it). Unless the disabling of the pipes and vertex shader prevents it from clocking the same. Or possibly they also locked some other part of the board that may limit the OC. I'd hope that if a the 6800 GT Leadtek can reach 450/1200, the 6800 GS should be able to as well. Any takers?

I'm running a Gainward 6800GT Golden sample with a zalman vf900 my max overclock on core is 435 and mem is 1100. OK the leadtek my have better mem so reach 1200 but 450 on the core seems really high. I would be very suprised if you reach 450 with any 6800GT.

Umm.. I did mention the 450MHz was from a cunning BIOS 1.6V mod? Its just a setting in the BIOS I had with my Abit AV8..

For the overclock, not exactly... cs the pipes were disabled mostly for good reasons, perhaps its partly faulty? Do recall when ppl were discovering that the 6800nu unlocks, the overclocks were mostly rubbish.. some cant even get 5MHz more from stock.. However, they had better OC experiences with the 4 extra pipes disabled..

Perhaps I'm wrong, maybe they've purposely disabled the 4 pipes off a perfectly working 6800GT batch just to sell them as 6800GS..

Teachmech, if u have a default volt mod on the BIOS.. try upping it to 1.6V, I'm pretty sure that'll crunch another 15-25MHz extra on the core.. but I recall the Golden Sample stock cooler isnt that efficient..

My gigabyte BIOS runs upto +0.3V throgh AGP but my max without artifactes is still 435 just my core. I'm running a zalman vf900 so core still very cool. Thanks for the tip sawyen.

That appears to the the tipping point for the 6800 GS. I'm having the same discussion on Tom's Hardware. One guy has his 6800 GS at 436/1160 on stock cooling, which I don't think is bad. If I can get the PNY 6800 GS to get up to the speeds of that 6800 GT leadtek, then I'll definitely be happy to save an extra $10 along with a 3 year warranty. Plus, I know I'd have alot of fun modding everything .

    436/1160 with 16pipes? hmn..

I'm starting to think this is far too unfair.. It nevered occured to me that they were using full fledged NV40 chips, well.. we learn new things everyday..

So I guess if u can find one which has a fully working GT core, not those which have partly faulty NV40s.. then by all means go for it.

Personally I feel its a little well... not too believable to have a 16 pipe GS that clocks that high... but I guess somehow time might prove me wrong..
