If you have any use for video decoding the x1600 is a good idea. If you have an SLI motherboard the 6600 is the way to go. Preformace is similar, I think some games work better with ATI cards and some with nVidia, but I'll let someone who knows more than I do fill you in on that.

U want to get the X1600XT 256MB as it uses GDDR3 RAM rather than GDDR2 RAM therefore the RAM is quicker, i recently sourced a Sapphire X1600XT 256MB card for a friend, i looked at clocks etc. and it is better than the X1600 512MB RAM, a lot of people are thrown because a card might have more RAM or says PRO in the name they think it is better. The card i got him was about £95

probably go for the x1600pro if those are your only 2 options.

however it depends on what resolution you use the card at. the x1600pro should also overclock somewhat.

Also it is an AGP card you are looking for right?

    Personally > x1600pro

Looks like spending a touch more for the 7600GS would be the smart move

Yep because a PCI-E card will go soo fast in his AGP system

For last gen games like HL2 etc I'd go with the 6600gt, but for this gen I'd go with the 1600pro as it's shaders cope better.
