    7900GT fan noise

Just wondering how loud the stock fan on these things are?

And do they throttle down OK when not in 3d? My current XFX 7800GT doesn't, does my head in too.

I read somewhere that none of them throttle down and are at 100% all the time - is there any truth in this?

They're REALLY noisy, but then I have had watercooling for the last 9 months. I couldn't be bothered to integrate the 7900GT into my watercooling setup, so I replaced it with a Zalman fan, now it's near enough silent.

    Cheers guys.

What about the reference cooler? the non-fancy xfx one, anybody got any experience with it?

Umm.. I dont have a 7900GT, but if it never throttles down.. then its really a small price to pay for not going nuts..

The X1800XT is noisy and all, but at least it throttles down to near silent when in 2d mode..

Yep the 7900gt does NOT throttle. However you will be throttling someone when you hear the noise out of it.

Has anyone tried replacing the fan on a 7900 GT with a passive solution?

(Or is this a bad idea suitable only for frying transistors?!)

Some folks over at SPCR forums have done it. Not a major problem, as it runs very cool anyway. Just make sure you have decent case airflow.

lol.. indeed, have it known that my squishy ball is a nice way to throttle down my anger..

so, either spend 20 quid for the zalman, or 2 quid for a couple of stress balls..

Looks like I may have to go with the zalman then.
    Thanks guys

If anyone DOES know of a 7900GT that throttles, I'd love to know the brand
