Yes, the MS interview I saw stated DX10 would be Vista-only. There's a load of stuff going on behind the scenes which means it would be very hard to shoehorn into XP (and why would MS bother anyway, they have to give people a reason to upgrade to Vista...).

They based the Aero interface on DX9 because even MS realises that developing the whole UI around a technology that is itself still in development would be a dumb thing to do, heh.

Yea i saw the preview on anandtech was quite impressed,id had alot of people telling me how bad NF4 was on intel platform, just wish i could find some hard dates and prices.

According to the Anandtech article, they were still 'getting ready' to ship reference boards during Computex, so they've probably just arrived in Taiwan. I'd speculate a month to design/tweak/add extra bits we don't really want/validate/set up production, then another month to make the boards and ship them to Europe (where 'ship' is the operative word, and China's on the other side of the world).

Unfortunately I won't be able to wait 2 months .

Additonally, as mentioned b4, there is always something better around the corner, however if I done my research and realised that I should not have gotten my 6800gt agpo card in the 1st place ( and went straight for the pci express gfx with nforce 4...then it WOULD have been prudent to wait.
As for DX10, It rarely pays to be an early adopter.

The confusion over DX10 and Vista is because early in Vistas development process, it was announced that Vista would ship with DX10, and Aero requires DirectX compatible graphics cards, so it was assumed by most that this meant that it required a DX10 card. MSoft cleared it up a month or so later by announcing that DX9 cards will work with Aero.

And I know all about 'waiting for the next thing round the corner'. I bought a 6800GT in a S754 board just weeks before S939 and PCI-E became affordable. Then earlier this year I got a 7800GT and a S939 board, just to find out the 7900 was coming out in a month or two, and that AM2 was nearly upon us.

Talking of which Silent Shark, I remember it being the consensus that 754 would be the budget choice, and 939 the enthusiast/high end equivalent. But after only a few months, they scrapped 754, and budget moved to 939.

I bet a lot of people were pissed about that, I'd imagine including yourself.

That is a pretty damn insane price for a pair, I sold my 6800GT + Zalman VF900, for £140!

Go for the 68's they'll happily last you until DX10 is in full swing

Subject to change as it aint released, but I did read a few months back on an MS Engineers blog that Aero has been written in DX9. DX10 won't be backwards compatible and will be Vista only. New GFX cards will be needed for those spify new DX10 games (what else is new).
