Hey guys,
With my old bfg 6600gt i was able to adjust the fan speed (using rivatuner) so that the fan was about 40% in 2D (ie silent) but then 100% for 3d... i've tried to do the same with my xfx 7900gt it does nothing...
so :
a) is this an issue with the card, or is it a software thing?
and
b) what is a decent (quiet but good performance) aftermarket fan for this?
a) probably need an updated Rivatuner
b) artic cooling VGA solutions are meant to be good.
edit: ah.. but not for 7900gt.. hmm.. zalaman?

I use one on my 7900GT, it's as quiet as anything even on full power (can be made quieter due to fan controller, but I've never needed to use it) card idles at 38C.

From what I have read the Arctic Cooling made for the 6600GT will fit on the 7900GT without any problems so that might be worth lookign in to, I have to put up with mine until i can afford to go water.
VF900 CU is your best bet. Just leave it on silent mode!
ok, scan seem to do this for a shade over £23... so its quite tempting, have you been able to maintain the same overclocks with the zalman on silent The Codfather ?
The Zalman will reduce temperatures over the stock cooler. But avoid significant overclocking of your 7900GT, as they break quite easily unlike previous generation cards.

how do you mean 'break'... just out of the blue?
I've managed to maintain just the same clocks no problem, infact the "Detect Optimal Settings" in coolbits even mangaged to get a few extra MHz out of core and RAM.
Scrandman is right though, the 7900's are having quite a few problems when it comes to overclocks so you've got to be careful. If I run FEAR with the detect optimal settings clocks, the game will run fine but when I come out all I get is a black/image/black/image flickering screen that won't go away until I restart :)
That was solved by clocking it lower though, but I probably should get the card RMA'd :/
He's referring to the overclocking issues associated with some of the pre-overclocked cards from manufacturers such as XFX but I don't think its fair to say that 7900GT "break quite easily" because they don't. TBH, I think the whole thing's been rather overblown. Have a look on HardOCP if you're that worried.
well i got one of those 'pre-overclocked' ones, but its something like 480core and 1400 mem.. its now at 550 core and 1600 mem fine, is it likely to explode on me :P
I'm at 560 core and 1800 mem, perfectly fine. I think the core would hit a lot higher if I voltmod it :)Quote:

its not just the pre overclocked cards, its not just the gt models, and i think that in comparison to the 7800 series of cards, it IS fair to say that they break easily...installed mine around lunchtime, was broken by 6pm with a couple of hours of use.Quote:
