Overclocking an x1900xt
First of all hi everyone, this is my first post.
I bought a Sapphire X1900Xt from Scan a few days ago (great service btw) and fitted it last night.
Everything seems ok, though just before window loads the screens go pinstripe blue vertically for about 2 tenths of a second, but then seems fine.
My question is regarding OC these cards. Using the ATI software I noticed there was an option to automatically OC the card - I've done this before with my nvdia 7800GT so thought I'd give it a go - out of curiosity more than anything else.
So after the 15 minutes of selt testing I got the following results - which seem incredibly high to me.
Graphics Processor
Current vpu = 500MHz OC- 689MHz - additonal 189MHz
Graphics Memory
Current 594MHz OC- 734MHz - additional 140MHz
Temps rose from around late 40's/50s to 72 degrees.
When it asked me if I wanted to apply these settings I said no - they just sound far too high . From what I've read elsewhere these cards aren't great at OC, so I was expecting maybe 5% at the most not nearer 40%! :O_o1:
My question is do these OC figures sound reasonable? Should I have accepted the settings or am I right in being cautious -I feel I am :)
I'd be interested to hear from other users with this card and peoples opinions.
Thanks and nice forum.

Hi - and welcome
What I'd do is take these OCs as a starting point then manually take 10% off and loop 3dmark05/6 whilst running rivatuner to monitor temps etc. If you're happy that its stable and not getting too hot increase the OC and repeat.

I have a good link to a guide...lemme just check if it's ok to put it up

X1900s have different settings for 2D & 3D clocks
default 3D clocks for X1900XT are 625 core & 725(1.45GHz) mem

The temps can get up to 90°C under full load and the fan does make a fair old noise, but as long as you aren't getting lockups or artifacts, it's fine.
/me strokes his water-cooled X1900XT
Cheers,
Stephen

Seeing as I have had no reply from my note to Steve - here is the link to a decent guide :)

Thanks for all the info guys and kempez for the link. :)
I'll try it at those settings and keep an eye out on the temps and for artificats - I may even try nothingfaces suggestion - I've never used 3D mark or rivatuner before.
I'll post what I get it running at.

RTHDRIBL is also a good one to use for artifacting
