£300-£350 on a new monitor...So which one :)

I need a new monitor after my Iiyama gave up the ghost yesterday

I have never owned a TFT before and really I am not to sure what I should be looking for. I do like the look of the Sony monitors, are they good ones?

I'm just after some suggestions please, and which ones to advoid.

Cheers.

That my friend is a relatively easy choice Can't go wrong .Viewsonic is generally a good brand to go for, they make brilliant enthusiast monitors...

So can anyone persuade me to pick up the Viewsonic over the Dell 2007 WFP? I'm going to be upgrading this week and it'd be interesting to see if I should make a last minute change.
I do like the looks of the Viewsonic, but it's the stand that really throws me off, I'd like a bit more adjustability.

There was a very serious problem with banding on the Dell displays, i think i am correct in thinking that there is an new A02 revision which has fixed this, but can someone please confirm this.

I personally think the Dell is better looking and it also has the USB hub, which is an added bonus, though not essential.

The most important thing to find out is if the new Dell monitors have infact fixed the problem totally, so anybody with a 2007 WFP can you please advise.

If the problem has not been fully resolved then say well clear of the Dell.

I have a Dell 2005 FPW and would switch to viewsonic without even thinking about it, if of course I wanted to change my monitor...

Yeah, the banding has been cleared up in the A02 revision, I wouldn't be looking at it otherwise. It's a hard choice, I do agree that the Dell is the better looker out of the two, I think it just has a much more slick finish.

Spec wise though I don't think there's all that much difference in the montiors? I know the Viewsonic is quoted as "8ms gray-to-gray (avg.); 16ms white-black-white (typ)" on their website, whereas the Dell only has 16ms noted, but I know that manufacturers pick and choose which timing to quote at times.

Excuse my little hijack Trash Man >__<

As far as modern LCD's you can't go wrong with the Dell's, Viewsonic, LG (Had mine a year and couldn't be happier), Samsung and I also hear good things about NEC. Just decide what size it is that you want then have a hunt for reviews, there's plenty out there and it should give you a better idea of what you're buying itno

Only downside is that its currently being sold at £390.00 but imo its well worth every penny

Will a 20" WS end up being a smaller screen than my old 19" crt? Never really thought about WS monitors before.

Thanks for all the help btw

your 19" CRT is maybe 18" viewable 4:3 A 20" widescreen TFT is slightly higher than a 17" 4:3 screen, similar to but probably slightly lower than an 18" 4:3 screen. It is however a lot wider I used to have a 19" iiyama CRT and now have a vx2025. Didn't even think about going back I chose Viewsonic over Dell because Viewsonic had a nicer warranty (zero dead pixel warranty for first week/month too!) and I've heard enough horror stories about Dell

I've had my viewsonic for over a year without any issues. It's a great screen and worth every penny. However i do like the look of the new Dell screens. If you do go for the Dell make sure its a A02 revision.
