Stick or Twist? Radeon 850XT PE or trade up

My PC although reasonable runs quite a few games with low frame rates at the moment.

    I currently have the following

    AMD64 3500
    Radeon 850XT PE
    2 GB Crucial RAM
Nvidia SLI delux Nforce 4 Mobo

I'm trading up to a dual core AMD 4800 but am wondering if that is enough to start improving performance. I am just wondering if folks think there would be enough of a gain to trade up to a 7900 GTX or for a SLI set up 7900GT?

    Thought, brickbats, comments?

Your system would benefit much more from greater graphics power as opposed to greater CPU power. x1900xt's are very well priced right now.

actually I'd stick with it, build the new PC, play for a while, and then go again.

In theory at leasy you need a new video card, but having recently gone from an XP 2800 with 1 gig and an X800 Pro AGP to an Opteron 146 @2.2 , 2 gig and an X800 XT PE, it's actually the CPU and ram that's making life nicer!

My 17" monitor is limtited really to 1280x1024, so while I'd love some more AA and AF on a better card, the CPU has made my games better by quite a margin. Encoding video and music has also been a big (shock!) improvement too, stuff I thought I was happy with.

Thanks all for the responses, I upgraded to a dual core 4600 over the weekend and that seems to have improved things more than I expected so I am relatively happy. I'll stick with the 850 for the moment.

I would the 850 is a good card. Wait until the new range come out next year and then upgrade. The only problem is that your X850 will depreciate more by then.
