Considering one, other than for watching video any advantages?
Any disadvantages? I could imagine it being a bit odd for games.

I have a 2005fpw (20"). Wouldn't go back to 4:3 if you paid me and gave me a free monitor!
It's awesome. Especially if you watch DVDs. Most games are fine, or can be modded to run widescreen.
I have the same as above, wouldn't go back to 4:3 either. Bit annoyed at the lack of support on most titles but there are config hacks and its getting better
. I would definitely go for a 24" over this one though.

Any sub £200 monitors recomended then?
This one looks decent. http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114797

Depends what size you want. Remember, 19" has the same resolutions as a 17", so some people think it's better value to get a 20" (more desktop space).
I'm aiming to get a 20" widescreen, and am hoping to get the dell 2007 if it goes down to £300 in a sale. If not, I can settle for the 2005 (as above again).
19" is not really woth the money cause it's nearly identical to a 17". Go for 20", it's worth it

Leica M3 - Summicron 50/2 DR - Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 - M-Rokkor 40/2
Olympus OM2n - Zuiko 50/2 Macro - Zuiko 50/1.4 - Zuiko 35/2.8
I just recently went from a 24" visi CRT to a 20" widescreen TFT and wouldn't go back..
It's awesome for games though word of warning, CS 1.6 is odd to play in a TFT :s
Seems alot slower, so now I have both the TFT and CRT hooked up,
I just movemy chair across if I'm playing CS
I got the NEC MultiSync LCD20WGX for £280 brand new and I can't fault it in any way.
I went from a 19" LG TFT to the Dell 2007 WFP and I'm loving it, great for browsing, fantastic for games (just make sure you GPU is upto it) definately recommended overall, no way I'd switch back to 4:3, although a 24" would be nice next time![]()

I love my Dell 2005FPW, it's brill and lovely for gaming and especially video editing.
As for sizes, well yes a 20" is better in both size and resolution than a 19" monitor, however my brother bought this Hanns-G 19" widescreen (half way down, £107.95 + vat) and it's actually really good. In fact, when i go to his house i cannot tell the difference in size between his and mine (although i'm sure you could if you put them side by side). My Dell was bought at the very lowest price of £335. There is no way on earth that my monitor is nearly 3 times better than his.
In terms of value for money, that Hanns G makes every other monitor on sale look like a pile of puke in my opinion.![]()

Got a 2405FPW. It rocks - especially good if you're doing anything with logs or long strings of text (coding etc). Also it's pretty useful to have a program open, and enough space next to it to have the documentation open.
Stuff I've played recently including BFME, BFME2, FEAR, Freelancer, Quake 4, WoW, CoD2, Warcraft 3 never had a single problem with the screen looking odd in games which don't support widescreen natively.
I use a 26" Widescreen Philips LCD and would never wish to go back to 4:3!
Every game I play supports widescreen and looks even better in widescreen.
But I hardly use my PC for games and even everything else is so much better.
Even the simple things on your PC are so much better, more desktop space, your start menu can keep going right for ages before hitting the end of the screen.
So much more space to do stuff in programs like Excel and Photoshop.
It shouldn't be a question of should I buy widescreen, if you can afford to get one, just get one.![]()
Well, depends on if you want to play modern games at native resolution or not. If its for general use, browsing, DVDs, then it'll be more that adequate, but if you are going to use it for gaming (Which I do) then I'll struggle at native res.Originally Posted by ajbrun
19" WS monitors are getting better in price all the time. I bought my Acer AL1916W for about £180 but i think that you can get it for about £140 now. It doesnt have DVI, but put it this way, i cant say that quality hasnt been good!!!
But it IS great for gaming - pretty much any game released these days has widescreen support, and if they use the Doom3 and Source engines then its definitely possible. Just make sure that you get a good GPU if your rig is primarily for games, as switching to lower res does reduce quality a bit...
I used my 6800 (vanilla) with my 20" Dell widescreen, before upgrading to the 7600GT. The 6800 did work, but just not fast enough for my needs, so I gave it to my brother.
That said, my brother plays BF2 just fine on his 19" widescreen (1440 x 900) setup and is happy with it.
