Graphics Card Decision

Hi all,

I'm looking to build a new core2duo system based around the E6600 processor. I have a 17" tft and I'm torn between a Connect3D X1800XT 512mb or a EVGA Geforce 7900GT Signature Series graphics card.

Your opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated!

What about an x1900gt, they seem to be on par or if not above 7900gt cards at around £140-150. The Connect3d, Sapphire and HIS all seem pretty simmillar, performance should be identical but they have different bundles/features.

bloody hell that Signature Series is an expensive card. what does it do over a normal 7900gt besides guaranteed overclocks?

Yeah expensive for not much reason

If you can push the boat out get an X1900XT, if not get a 7900GT...imo

You will be running at 1280 on your monitor, so don't spend silly money. About £150 should be enough to secure a good card for your monitor resolution.

I read various pc magazines; one such being Custom PC. Although the card is just essentialy an overclocked 7900GT, the performance tests (in Custom PC magazine) show that its quite a capable card - similar infact to the X1900XT which has been mentioned as an alternative. I do agree that it is expensive, it doesn't have as many pipelines nor does it have 512mb of memory like the X1900XT cards but it does perform outstandingly well for what it is.

I have a 17" TFT monitor running at a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 - There are many cards out there which would be wasted on such a resolution.

What would you recommend on a budget of £200 give or take a few pennies (or less! like menthel posted )

One Of These?
Leadtek GeForce 7900 GT 256MB
£166.79

got one t'other day and its running at 550/1600 without breaking a sweat. havent bothered maxing it out yet. cheapest 7900gt iv seen. against the EVGA Sig Series you would save £109.23 according to the prices on overclockers. thats a shedload

Certainly an option; and it does have a very reasonable price!

How does it handle current games at a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024?

If you add a aftermarket cooler you could also probably clock it much higher than normal too and still save money!

However the EVGA card does have an enhanced warranty if the card dies.

Pretty much what I was wanting to hear

With respect to the long term how do you think it will hold up? Or would it be better to invest in something else?

leadtek are a very descent brand of cards. been using them off and on since the days of the GeForce 2 MX, always clocked to the levels they have in reviews and in the case of the 5900xt a bit higher. never had a problem. im sure EVGA are very good (they have the upgrade thingy dont they? but only in the states?) but when your talking about paying that much more for a card that is to all purposes with the minor exception of a hs+f change the same i wouldnt touch it unless i was a lottery winner.

as for the long term.... it would be worth waiting till dx10 cards hit. but that could be a while and they could be rather expensive with no immediate gains. right now is about the time the last train to dx9'sville leaves. its really up o you wether you jump on or sit it out.

I currently have an old Gigabyte Radeon 9700Pro...Lets just say I need a major upgrade

DX10 cards are probably a few months off yet, and game compatibility even further. Do you think a 7900GT would suffice until then?

no point spenind out on "signiture series" i made my 7800 gtx into the xxx xfx extreme version in about 4 minutes with coolbits, saving my self over a hundred quid, i suggest you do the same... it will handle all games fine they are about the same speed as a 7800 gts and mine is fine for most things at max, i use and lg1780q

Absolutely. Buying a cheaper card and overclocking it sounds like a money saving idea

Are all the 7900GT similar to one another performance wise? Bar the pre-overclocked ones...

yah, tbh the overclocked ones are a gimick, because you get them home and they dont overclcok anymore lol. so basically the worst looking or priced card will oc somehow or very close to the xxx versions its so easy to do and take three mins
