which tfts have the lower-than-native feature?

    hello,

i am looking to buying a new monitor - a tft monitor of at least 17 inches.

i remember i once came across a site that did some reviews and mentioned a technology that only some tfts have - being able to use a lower resolution with quality with a tft.

apparently some tfts allow you to use a lower than native resolution by just blocking out the rest of the screen, and so by using only 1024x768 of the pixels on a 1280x1024 screen. this is unlike most monitors who just stretch the picture to fit, and so it doesnt quite work out the same.

i was just wondering if anyone knew which tfts that anyone sells have this feature, but i cant remember what its called, hence the post up here!

    many thanks in advance!

oh, and being a student i want to keep cost as low as possible.

The Dell ones do what you ask, I'd probably go for more than 17" though as that's equivalent to about 2" worth of e-penis

I thought this technology was only used on widescreen TFTs (so you don't have big fat images at the wrong resoutions)

It generally is only used on Widescreens I believe...most TFTs will try to scale the image initially (?), and IIRC, can't you adjust whether you want stretch to fit/keep aspect ratio etc options in Nvidia Control Panel anyway?

My non-widescreen doesn't have it, and I can't find any option in the nVidia control panel for it either

it's 1:1 pixel mapping, some do it, some don't, there is the options for scalling in the gfx drivers if you use a DVI connector to the monitor but again this works on some monitors and not on other's.

as per my above post, you will only get the scaling options in the Nvidia drivers if the monitor is connect through DVI.

right, so itll perhaps be better to go for a widescreen one with this pixel mapping thing.

i hear the dell 1907fp isnt the best, so i probably wont go for one of them.

There's an option in all NV drivers to change the scaling mode, you can select from:

TFT scaling (the LCD does the scaling)
GPU scaling (the GPU does the scaling)
No scaling (the GPU will add black borders, netting an end result of 1:1 pixel mapping)

If your graphics drivers don't support these options, then I know all Dell monitors (apart from the 30") have a lot of built-in scaling modes.

We got a bunch of new 1707FP's at work and their image quality is pants compared to my 2005FPW.

2005's OSD under Image Settings has:
Scaling - 1:1, Fill or Aspect

    I wouldn't buy a LCD without it

you only get those options when connected by DVI...... and some of the lower end widescreens still won't scale correctly when using the options.
