Undecided

I'm undecided between a 7600gt (around £100) and an x1900gt (£140).
Thing is I don't really play that many games, I specialise in doom 2 and I haven't even bought a game since doom 3, and at uni I don't think I will have the time, but £40 isn't that much for a very considerable improvement and I could probably get some slightly cheaper RAM and cheaper soundcard to make up for it.

I'm going to get the Hanns.G 19" widescreen because this pc will be as much for watching dvds and videos as it will be for anything else which is 1440x900 so resolutions I don't think will be very high.

i would go x1900gt, whats 40 quid ay, a night out? do it :)

Or alternatively get the 7600gt and go out and enjoy yourself on the extra. Sounds the most likely with the fact that you say you don't really play games!

There's a £95 XXX edition 7600gt on scan, might as well go for that. I trust Nvidia drivers to handle the widecreen better to be honest.

No point spending your hard earned cash on a card which offers performance and features thats you'll never use.

I had the same decision to make last week, the choice was between the GeForce 7600GT (£100), 7900GT (£185) or the Radeon X1900GT (£140). I looked at reviews and benchmarks from tech sites on the net and went for the X1900GT as the 7900GT would have pushed my budget far too high (spending £140 on graphics was pushing it as it was) and the 7600GT, although competent is in a different class to the X1900GT. If you want the optimum in the ratio of price / performance then the x1900GT is very much in the sweet spot, if however your wanting to keep your budget as low as possible and want something that is merely competent then the 7600GT is a good choice, or if your wanting to save even more then check out the GeForce 7300 GT (be careful though, make sure its one with GDDR3 & 8 pipes, there are other variants) or the Radeon X1300 XT (a rebadged X1600 Pro at a new lower price) as both offer acceptable 3D performance at popular resolutions for a low cost.

Cheers went for the xfx 7600gt in the end, should last me untill dx10 cards become the norm. I like the fact that it has green dvi ports :D

Now to pick up some games :)
