Is it worth waiting for DX10 cards..?

I'm thinking of building my new system sometime in september (if the mobos and whatnot get their acts together, chipset driver issues are boundddddd to happen :p)...
...and I thought
What will DX10 bring to the board over DX9?
(when is DX10 released btw?)

Will features and performance be significant?

I'm wondering because I don't know whether or not I should wait to build my new system with a DX10 card or just build it with a current market card.
If the answer is "build with a current market card"

Then the question arises do I get a cheap card now and then spend spend spend on a dx10 card when it comes out?

(god I hate buying new computers, its almost like dabbling in the stock market :crazy: )

I suspect it will be just like when the geforce 5xxx cards came out. Increased power consumption, cost, fan noise.

In short, I would not recommend spend-spend-spending on any first generation product unless you either have money to burn or you are a hardcore gamer (in which case it is improtant to you).

Well, if you ignore the fact the new cards will be DX10. Building a PC when new top of the line cards come out in a month is daft anyway. They always drive the prices down then.

So, if you wait a month you will be able to see if they are worth it. If they arnt you can pick up a bargain previous high end card.

Buy an X1900XT, tons of power and pretty cheap right now, annd it'll easily be sellable for £100+ come upgrade time.

Not worth it IMHO, I'll probably get whats best now.. and wait till DX10 settles down, then get the 2nd gen cards..

You know DX10 will be pretty buggy when launched..

I wasn't sure myself whether to wait for the next gen cards or not. But now I've decided I can't be bothered to wait for so much longer.
Also considering that the 1st of the DX10 cards will no doubt need a lot of improvements before they are as awesome as they should be, I'm glad i've decided that i'll be going with something from the current gen of cards, or maybe even wait for the new x1950s, at least they're only a few weeks away. ;)

Good points guys - I will wait for those previous high end cards to come down in price. Hopefully in that month's time mobo's will be good to go for core2

I think the most important point is what games support DX10? Not many and it will be a while before its standard.

Think most people are interested to see how fast the G80 and R600 will be in current DX9 games, me included.

On one hand I would like to get onto the duo or x2 thing for the increased pci-e fps.
But what's just around the corner? Vista? DirectX 10? OOooohhww!

I'm hooked on Titan quest right now,,( on the third character) and oblivion still has half the quests unsolved and a few more gates open..
But then there is Stranglehold, oh that looks sooooo beautiful, and what about Crysis?

Rumour has it that the first gen of DX10 cards will have extreme power consumption needs, hence the dedicated graphics power supplies shown at CES (including an OCZ model that fits in a 5.25" drive bay with pretty dials and lights :p).

The generation after the first gen DX10 cards are meant to be back to 'normal' power consumption.

While you may not be bothered about the power itself (although you should, its not free in terms of cash and the environment), more power means more heat which means more noise.

its looking more and more like a waiting game. when vista comes out it`s going to suck, in which case it would be better to wait for the sp1 release which will be about 6 to 9 month down the line. By which time DX10 card will be selling for more sensible prices and a lot of the driver bugs will be fixed + there should be a few more dx10 / vista / games out in the shops.
i would pick up 1900XT 512 in a few weeks time when the prices are a bit lower.

I'll go DX10 when the first game I really want has DX10 as min requirement, until then then my 7900/X1900 wll fill the bill

Also the fact you would have to factor in a new OS as DX10 will not be coming to Windows XP :/
