"System failed VGA test" Part 2

Hiya, a few weeks back on posted on the forums with what I thought at the time was a gfx card problem http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=78476 After some advise I sent the card back to Ebuyer, a fault was found with the card and to my surprise got a full refund for my old X850 XT PE. I decied to wait for the X1950's to come out, after a few weeks of waiting I picked up my new gfx card from scan this morning, got home installed it fine and I'm still getting the same "System failed VGA test" message.

So does anyone have any ideas what it could be? Or have had the same problem. The only thing I can think it can be is either the MB or the PSU, neither of which are old. What are the chances that the new gfx would be DOA? As if it's not that how come they found a fault with my old card.

what options are in BIOS?

Is it expecting SLI? Can you make it into BIOS even, or is the card not gonna let you?

Reset your BIOS?

I managed to find another system to swap parts in and the gfx card from that would not work in my comp either, but my new X1950 worked fine in the second system.

So I guess I need a new MB. Might just go the whole hog and upgrade the lot to a conroe system.

There was a BIOS update made available for this board last month, before you condemn it try updating it. You'll find it on the usa dot asus dot com website (sorry can't post URLs yet, just search for the mobo and use the downloads link on left of page to find BIOS updates). Whilst the latest version didn;t have any changes pertinent to VGA, the previous version did, so the latest should have that consolidated. Just take a look and see if your BIOS version matches up.

How do I update the bios if I can't see anything? When I power up the system the first thing that happens is I get a string of beeps from the internal speaker and I get the voice through the headphones/speakers saying "system failed VGA test" I get no picture at all and the boot process goes no further.

You must have had something working in there at some point before you bought a new card, surely? I was assuming you'd still have the old gfx card that previously worked, sorry if you haven't.

The old card did not work in there either. The problems started when the old X850 was in the system, I thought it must have been a gfx card problem. So I RMA'ed it back to Ebuyer who said they found a fault with the card and gave me a full refund. I decied to wait for the X1950's to come out instead of settling for a x1900. I finaly got my X1950 saturday, put it in my system and I still have the same problem, so it was not the gfx card that was at fault. I don't know why Ebuyer said there was a fault with my old card, maybe they never checked it.

Yesterday I tried my new card in my brothers computer and it worked fine, I tried his in mine and it would not boot. That's 3 different cards I have tried and it won't boot with any of them. I just get the same "System failed VGA test" message.

I think it's either MB or PSU problem, I'm 90% sure it's the MB tho.

sounds defo like ya board gone belly up m8, chances are you X850 went wrong and took something with it on the motherboard or vice versa keep us updated once ya fix

p.s by chance have you tryed another PSU, only plug in bare essentials and try with another PSU theres no need to install the PSU simply bench test antother PSU connected to your tower

System boots fine with an old PCI card I had lying around. So I updated the bios to the latest version and still no luck.

Not had a chance to try another psu in there. Only person I know with a PCI-E system is my brother and he's a WoW addict, so it took a lot of work to get him to let me swap the cards about

I'll try again tomorrow morning when the WoW servers are down for a few hours.

Managed to try another PSU in there today and still the same problem so it's deffo the mb.

Have you tried the card in both PCI-E slots? And tried flipping the SLI board around?

Yea I tired it in both slots, although I thought if you only have 1 card it will only work in the top slot.

What Sli board?

Between the 2 PCI-E slots is a small card inserted into a socket......the card has edge connectors on both sides....if you plug it in one way it configures the PCI-E slots for SLI, plug it in the other and it configures them for independant operation.
