Not sure I can specifically suggest a partic TFT but things to consider are ...

    * 20ms response time (best if you plan to game and/or watch movies).
    * Native res (what you'll really be stuck to using for Windows and games).
    * Contrast and brightness, compare them.
    * Connector, DVI is nicest but you'll obvioously need the gfx card to sport DVI too.
    * 24bit colour (all should have this now), 16.7Million instead of 65thousand colours/shades.
    * Inbuilt speakers save space and clutter but are dire.
    * Extras like USB ports, rotation, footprint, colour, looks etc.

    yeah - thanks

I think all the response times are prrty good (<20ms)
they all are 1280 1024 (what my 19" CRTs running)
and i do have a DVI source
finally i dont realy need the speakers (getin a set of 5.1s - one day)
and i would like to be able to rotate it (for fun) but any thing is better that the old 15" CRT i've got at the mo!!

also i cant be cream!! (case is black, keyboard etc black/silver)

I know you don't want to complicate the issue but I can only comment on the one I run - a Hitachi CML174SXW 17" in black. Ignore it if you will! However, I love it!

Screens are the hardest areas to agree on - everyone has different colour perception, needs and preferences. The only way to choose is view them all.

Or let your (Dad's) budget steer you...

As for your 'definate answer' deadline, that's up to you and your Dad, mate.

You've picked the wrong iiyama! The very best 17" iiyama TFT is the 4332 in black. It is one of the best in picture quality has a 500:1 contrast ratio which make it better for movies, twin DVI-I connectors, a DVI-I cable, a DVI-I to VGA cable, a four port USB hub, excellent engineering in that the vertical part of the stand includes cable control and allows the screen to tilt and swivel and rise and fall... did I say it pivots as well and comes with the pivot software?

Three year swap out waranty, one of the best pictures.. but please, don't pick the iiyama you have listed. In every size category, iiyama only make one or two excellent models - the rest are average. Of course, it's 1280 x 1024.

They have been reviewing TFT screens with a games slant and comes down strongly on the Hyundai Q17 and Hercules ProphetView 920 DVI.

MicroDirect sell the Hyundai (£289 +VAT sometimes in special offer @ £269), the Hercules is due out before xmas, but I can't find anybody selling it yet, but I bet it will be nearer £350 + VAT.
