I will soon be getting a 7950gt 512mb for my gaming rig. The best price I've found is a Leadtech from Scan for £200.93. http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=466119
Is it cheaper anywhere else? Thanks.

Why?
A X1900XT can be had for that price and is better.
The cheapest x1900xt Scan have is for £259.66. Where did you see one at the ~£200 mark?
Komplett have some nice prices. Ebuyer were selling a 512mb X1900 a week ago for less than 200.
A 256mb X1900XT is cheaper than a 7950GT and still a better card.

do you think it overclocks well?
Ok thanks for the advice. I'll go and check out those x1900xt's then. I've heard that their stock coolers are a bit loud. Is this true? What replacment coolers are recommended?
The Artic Silencer is always recommended. They are the best air cooling solution for all graphic cards in the market. Great cooling effects and extremely quiet. Even you had 2 of these fans set up in your system(eg. Crossfire set up), the noise level would still lower than your CPU fan.
But not worth the extra money. Buy a normal one, and keep the fan speed controlled. If you have a cool room/case it won't spin up very much anyways.
The Zalman V-900 is better.
hmmm.... i would still go for the 7900GT. a small mod and it clocks past 7900GTX speeds for £168... kicks 1900XT butt
depends on your budget really... a modded 7900GT (and possibly the 7950GT) will be as fast as a 7900GTX, which is faster than a stock 1900XT for less money.
but, if you can afford the 1900XT, it is obviously a better card, a bit faster and slightly better image quality.
I guess warranty obviously comes into play as well. X1900XT can be had with speed + a valid warranty..
a modded 7900GT or 7950GT will leave you with speed but NO warranty..
:P.. and of course volt modding will in majority of cases hurt the card's longevity as well.. I've seen lots of volt mods gone bad... they obviously stripped down the components for a reason..
The voltage modules on the 7900GT are dodgy enough as it is :p
Besides, if you're going to compare OC/modded cards, at least do the same for the X1900XT which also OC's something wicked.
aaah it depends on morality you see, 7900GT is modded with removable conductive ink, remove it if you card dies and RMA it.
the voltage increase you need to get to GTX speeds is 0.2 -> 1.4v the same as a GTX so longevity and temps are not a problem.
i would only advocate the 7900GT if you want to save £60 and are into modding things :D if you have the money to burn on a 1900XT then go for it.
the 7950GT is purely an overclocked 7900GT, i wouldnt bother.
FWIW my 7900GT does 650 core and 1800 mem. that is GTX speed :D
Personally I know after a few days hammering a new card to check it isn't DOA. My warrenty goes out the window. Never tried voltmodding, seems a great way to set £200 on fire.
Though the soft voltmod's are pretty safe.
you've made strong points, but a 7950GT at 550MHz/1400MHz is still not fast enough for a X1900XT.. you need to get round 600-650 on the core and 1600-1700MHz to hit X1900 performance.
Chips burn with +0.1V, :)... don't make the distinction that 0.2V is only 14% of 1.4V.. even a +0.05V of voltage ripple can send a chip to its grave. Having dodgy voltage regulators (on alot of batches) on the 7900GT doesnt help either. There's alot of 7900 volt mods that just went bad within weeks.
Well if you shop around, the 512MB X1900XT is just £40 more expensive. The only reservation I have for the 7900 against the X1900 is perhaps the cooler temps.
All in all, the same can be said for the X1900XT. If you've got the gear to cool that R580 core, volt modding the X1900XT (and you dont even need to do those pencil stuff, just a dial in ATItool and you're done) will send you sky high.. the only difference is that you'll need significantly cheaper gear to achieve that on a 7900.. But my point being, the 7900GT was never build to carry that kind of voltage. They may have the same PCB, but the component quality is different.
Its just like people was complaining (sorry to quote) that he didnt get 1.1ns on his X1900XTX. So a volt mod success on a 7900GT is a bonus, not a promised thing.. you could very well screw that thing up if the board was shipped with slightly lower rated components.
Well.. about that bit about rubbing things off.. :P.. I think I'm not that desperate into this until I'll shove off my responsibility to have duffed up a card and blame it on the manufacturer instead. Perhaps others might think its alright... Perhaps I'm just brought up this way.. :)
thats why i said it was a morality issue! :D
most of the 7900GT problems have been solved by now or they wouldn't be able to release the 7950.
i have just seen a bunch of 1900XT's on Ebay for £185, current 7900GT prices are about £165, so for £20 i think the 1900XT is a no brainer!! :p
How does an 1900xt compare to a 1800xt though? Worth the extra £40+ ?!
