    "best" is a relative term

you could line up a month's worth of **** and pick the "best" - it doesn't mean it's "good", or even "almost mediocre", in absolute terms - it is & remains ****.

a cheap discrete card, even a £30 card like a 7300, would blow any onboard solution you could name out of the water

As you're not a gamer, pretty much any onboard solution will fulfill your needs, although scrandman is right, the 6150 chipset is pretty good....

"Best" implies most able to do a task.
What do you want the on-board graphics to achieve?
If it is (as has been assumed) for playing 3d games, the 6150 is quite fair. It will allow you to play most games up to around 2004 / 2005 at lower levels/resolutions

Ay carumba! Can't seem to find any Intel boards with the nVidia 6150. Of the others available on the market, I'd rate them as follows:

    ATI Xpress 300 / 200
    Intel Extreme 2
    VIA Unichrome
    SIS Mirage

In fairness though there's not much between the last three - there all fairly pants.

Again, i repeat, best for what? A door stop? Making fish fingers?
If it is not gaming but just regular Windows (current generation) then there is no best, they are all good enough so it's not an issue.

these onboard things are so annoying, is it possible to get a good tablet pc that doesn't use onboard graphics? - otherwise all tablets will not be good for vista...

The VIA Unichrome is really, really bad. I don't like SiS, but their Mirage is far better than the VIA one. That said, the Intel Extreme is better than both for pure 2D image, and works with Vista if you dedicate enough memory (128mb graphics memory is the minimum IIRC, which is what I gave my Tablet when I was playing with RC1).

Out of those get the ATI or the Intel - less likely to have weird driver issues with them.

I've had a 6150 PC for nearly a year now and it is just about ok to play Rome Total War on it. It does occasionally stutter annoyingly though, but not as bad as with the early Nvidia 6150/430 drivers. Tried Counter Strike on the lowest settings and it really wasn't much fun.
Total Annhilation (unsurprisingly) worked no problem.

I wouldn't mind trying out the X3000 onboard video with the Intel G965 chipset, but really want to do it via the ASUS T3-PH1 barebones - which may come into existence in Scandinorwayvia around the 10th October.

6150 is ok as I say, but am currently considering replacing it by pulling the 6800GT from my other machine. I'd better get a tape measure out first thought to make sure that there is enough room in my quirky Akasa green acrylic casetastrophee!
I see from another thread here that it is reckoned that a 7600GT is better than a 6800GT.
Regarding onboard video, IMHO you only should really consider it if you're using a too small to contain a video card case and you don't want to "seriously" play any games.
