    Question 7900GS or 7950GT? OR 7900GTO?

both leadtek from scan.co.uk... theres about 35quid difference in price for extra 4 pipelines and bit faster gpu and ram IS IT WORTH that EXTRA CASH?
    opinions please.
    two cards in question are:
    7900GS
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=465741
    7950GT
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=466117

OR is it worth the GTO if i can stretch to 200ish...? this seems good value considering the GTOs are 300 or more and overclockers has one for 200.any good?
    bottom of page:http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/7900_Series.html

OH and could i flash it to a GTX? are they as overclockable as they reckon?

    cheers for all feedback.

Good riddance. Wish I'd done it about a year ago.

From what other forums confirmed, the GTO can be flashed to a GTX without much problems as they're still running essentially similar 1.2/1.4ns memory..

Certainly, you will not have that much headroom as some rare standard GTX running 1.1ns, i.e. standard GTX is as fast as you can go..

I think whether the £40 is worth the money, again, like all your other threads, its really up to your wallet and your sense of value..

Read up reviews and justify them yourself.. the two cards you mentioned have at least 5 reviews all from fairly trusted sites, Anand, Bit-Tech, Xbit, Hexus and such..

Why not take that little 5 minutes time and read up on those reviews and make your own judgement?

Once you get those into your head, and still puzzled, then post more specific questions

Questions of worth are always tricky to answer and there is a limit to how much anyone elses situation can help you

How I tend to look at these things is ask:

    a) have I got the money in the first place - there's no point saying 'if I spend 20 quid more' if I don't actually have that 20 quid anyway.

    b) if I do have the money, what else could I spend it on? Leaving aside other things in life to spend money on for the sake of this arguement, is there something else that you could buy with the money that will improve your PC experience more?

    c) will spending the extra money now pay off in the long term? Is the extra money actually going to make a difference as to the length of time before you upgrade again, or will you just make do with the small fps/IQ difference and still wait the same amount of time before buying a new card with new technologies? (if you are comparing two cards at the same level of technology).

    d) if you don't spend the money, will it decrease the time taken to save up for something else?

    etc.

regarding the GTO, on the OCuk forums Gibbo said that they aren't GTX cores

    http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/sho...4&postcount=78

apparently you can flash to GTX bios which allows you sli it with a GTX, but apparently the GTOs are not GTX cores.

But how do you differentiate between a GTX core and a GT core, both of them are essentially G71 cores, perhaps speed binned for obvious reasons. But if the GTO can soak up the extra voltage to hit GTX speeds, I do not see the reason why it cannot be 'technically' called a GTX core..

Like kalneil said, you have to ask yourself these kind of questions.. very often the value isnt clear cut. Depends how deep is your pocket, how much you willing to dig into your pocket, and when is it to stop digging and halt whatever you're letting buy..

because thats pointless thats like a few reviews not real people constantly using them now and saying how they've found them.yeah its good to see if in general its good and they oc'ed it for a day wow.well I want proper hands on experience from people really using it day to day hence asking opinions for masses of people not just a few reviews with a sample card or whatever

Then be more specific when you ask? , because from the number of threads you've started not too long ago, you've been asking basically the same questions..

If you want hands on experience with say how compatible is the card with games or any factual issues..

Don't get me wrong, I'm not being anal here.. Just that sometimes I see one question getting asked over and over again. It does get fairly disheartening.

EDIT: In answering your question, there should not be any different in compatibility between the 7900s other than performance. Although reviews can be fairly misleading at times, they do give you a fair elaboration between the different cards. So in the end, the question goes back to you.. how do you judge value, what games you play, do you do anything other than games, how comfortable are you with eye candy or framerates.

would you say it will be a considerable difference in speed between the gs and the gto? at stock?and is there a ruff safe spot i could achieve with the gto over clocked or the gs?could i even notice it in games do you think?
    cheers

look at review of the GS vs GT, the GTO is faster than the GT so you can safely assume the GTO will be noticabley faster!

For the money I don't think the GTO can be beaten at this moment in time.

the GS is a GT with 4 of it's pipelines locked but can be overclocked, and most come standard with 256Mb of RAM.

THe GTO is basically a GTX (yeah I know they are said to be using GT cores, but again the only difference is the voltage and core speed) but with the memory clocked lower (the same as a standard GT/GS 1320Mhz).

If every one of them can be flashed to a 7900GTX which I don't see any reason why ti can't be, it's only a slight bump in memory speeds, not sure if any voltages are changed and certainly no pipelines that need to be unlocked then you have a £250 card for £85 less.

When mine turns up, which I hope will be tomorrow as I am going away in the evening I will let you know, see if it can be flashed to a GTX, see how it reacts to water and report back, hopefully with some screenies.

to sum up, you get 200Mz on the core clock speeds, an extra 4 pipelines, a better cooler than most GS's and the possibility of flashing it to a 7900GTX, I think it's a no brainer if you can afford it.
