    X1950XTX overheating?

The only game I have to play is Rise Of Legends and within a few minutes of play the system reboots. It's a clean install of X64 with 6.8 Catalysts; so far I've tried the following-

    - Reseated cards + RAM
    - Swapped out the PSU
    - Run memory tests on the RAM
    - Swapped out the GPU

Running idle the fan barely moves, audibly spinning up when a game kicks in and it's really hot to touch which cheers me no end The case is a P180 with good airflow (nothing exotic, it's supposed to be a quiet system) so I figure it's the slow reaction time of the fan. Bypassing the fan speed with ATITool 0.25 Beta 15 stopped the blackouts (the PCs, not mine) and a little tampering with the speeds was enough to give the Catalyst software time to issue a VPU recover warning stating my temp as 87 degrees.

    Blast

I hope it's just a one off; I'll see if anyone else has the same problem and my add an Accelero X2 to help cool it down. By the way, Connect3D seem to have followed a certain merchant's style of packing; one box about 2 x 7 x 12 with one thin piece of foam and a single CD to protect it from knocking around

And now back to knocking over the Vinci...

Have you tried reseating the cooler on the graphics card? It could not be connecting to the die properly so it may be worth taking it off, cleaning it up and replacing the gunk with as5.

Sounds like a PSU issue to me, the X1900+ (I refuse to call it an X1950...) is capable of upto 100oC trust me

'Goku - You may have a point. The 1950 seems to be around the 245w region according to Anandtech (Custom PC say 300w but they say a lot of things) and I suspect the 600w Seasonic may not be up to the task if half of it's output is feeding the card. I'll break out the spare (higher rated) PSU and see if that makes a difference.

'Horse - Sound advice sir, will try tonight

keep us informed, I doubt its the PSU strugglign but it could be not so good on the ampage side of things (I thnk you need something like 34A on the 12V rail, may be wrong of course)

I swapped out the PSU for a PC P&C Silencer 750 (60A on the 12V rail) and it still showed the same problem. In desperation I began the slow process of removing one piece out at a time.

After all that, it was the memory. For medicinal purposes I keep 4GB of RAM on the board and the system passes the usual stability tests. Run a game at full tilt and it reboots. I removed 2 sticks; ran it as orthodox and two days of vigourous testing with Company of Heroes, Oblivion and Rise of Legends hasn't fazed it. I've taken Dark Horse's advice and replaced the applied grease with a thin layer of Arctic Silver and am keeping the more powerful PSU in there permamnently. It's still hot to the touch but the system is stable.

Thank you for your time gentlemen

The main problem with stock ATI drivers is the slow fan speeds that being said have you tryed ATI Tool it lets you manually adjust fan speeds acording to temps, for example right now at idle my X1900 sits at 30% once i enter a game and temps creep up to lets say 70 degress the fan speed increases to 50% if it goes over 80 degress it then ramps upto 80%, This certainly helps temps try it m8

I'll run a few games tonight and take the temperatures with my beloved Maplins infrared thermometer. I was tempted to add an Accelero X2 but after comparing the pinouts on the fan's power plug I've realised I'm stuck with the standard cooler

Sorry that it wasn't the PSU causing the problem , hopefully its just some dodgy ram and you can send it abck. All the RAM modules are matching right?

Aye sir, was lucky enough to buy just before the massive price hike. It's 2 matched pairs of the same kit (used the Corsair configurator). Tried both the guranteed timings (at the higher voltage) and the motherboard defaults...even disabled HyperPath 3 just in case that was the culprit. I did swap out the Seasonic for a nicer, neater PSU which reuces clutter in my case so that still worked out

Everything tells me the card is wrong...in a Frank Black kind of way I see it all before me...

I get 73c tops on my X1900XTX. After reading allot of posts on allot of forums, its pretty normal for these 1900/1950's to get that hot, even with moderate case cooling.

I'll try that ATI tray tool fan control setting though, dunno how it will work on my 'Toxic' sapphire card with watercooling.

I currently have an X1900XTX on RMA due to overheating....was hitting around 95c and causing artifacting......thing started to sound like a jet turbine as the system kept spinning the fan faster and faster to compensate.

Annoyingly it was a brand new replacement for the one that had died after 6 months use
