Looking for hi-res scientific type display

I am canvassing the market, looking for a display system for a scientific, rather than gaming application, but anyone deeply into high end graphics may be able to help us out.
Ideally, we want a monochrome display with 12 bits of intensity resolution, and 4096x4096 pixels. Since the pixel requirement is probably impossible in a single display, we would prefer as large a single monitor as we can get, and will pan (and zoom) the images as necessary.
Speed is not critical to the application, but with that much data to move, we clearly need high bandwidth. This will be supported by a high end PC system, so PCI Express or other high data rate fabric technology is expected.
I'd very much appreciate any suggestions, especially pointers to products currently available, or likely to reach the market in the next 8 to 12 months.

Im sure that Samsung and co. have made TFT’s of a resolution close to that (probably even above internally), but this going to be using highly specialist equipment to power it.

Doing it all on one monitor is going to be a problem. One of the largest “off the shelf” monitors is going to be the Dell 3007 here

There are bigger TFT’s out, but the next problem you face is resolution. The monitor will be connected via DVI anyway, which using dual link has a limit of 3840 * 2400. Even if a TFT was available with the resolution you require, you will need more specialist / bespoke hardware to power it.

Whats the application (and budget) ?, might be able to think of some other ideas.

I've seen one of these over at medical research, they're perhaps the clearest crisp display ever..

Our research group will never be able to put aside 4 grand for a screen like that.. :).. this is one of those research grant killers.. imagine having to fit 4 of our workstation with it, 16 grand.. gone..

Well, as I said, a single monitor is not a hard requirement, just a nice feature.
The dual link DVI limit would be adequate, and a lot better than some of the smaller options we've seen in the past. Plenty of compute power and interface bandwidth can be designed in; it's still quite early in the project.

I can't talk much about the application, unfortunately. Let's just say it's from a very large imaging source, monochrome, and 12 bits deep. This will be a one-off, industrial project, not a commercial venture. Budget is probably adequate, and somewhat negotiable at this point in time.

This sort of display is used in digital mammography, for the radiologist to read the xrays.

That's good to know! I like the specs on the display, at least as far as pixel resolution is concerned.

Still hoping for greater gray scale depth from a driver through a display.
This ViewSonic is rated at 400:1 contrast ratio, so no more than 9 bits.
I'll probably never find 12 bits (4096:1 !), but we'd like as much as feasible.

Yes! That's exactly the sort of thing we're looking for, with lots of gray scale resolution, as well as high pixel count.

Any specific models that you know of?

I'd suggest you contact the medical divisions of companies that supply the medical sector specifically radiographic sections. siemens is probably your best bet.

I've also seen high quality X-ray monitors branded by IBM i think

Transworld

I've seen the screens and even though they are grey scale they look amazing!
