~150 quid step up from 6800GT

    Current specs in 'My System'.

First things first - I'm actually quite pleased with the performance of the 6800GT - it flies in just about everything I play, including oblivion. However I'll be helping someone out if I upgrade and give them the card, so with that in mind, are there cards out there for around 150 quid or less that will give me a noticable performance increase?

I only game at 1024x768 most of the time, and Oblivion is my game of choice, along with NWN2 when that comes out. Oblivion has to run at around medium-high details at the moment, and while it doesn't look all that different to higher detail levels (IMO) I wouldn't mind getting a bit higher framerates if possible, or at least giving some more room to up the resolution should I upgrade monitors.

I'm wary of getting something that's only marginally better at the currently released games, and would still require another update in a few months for newer titles anyway.

    Cheers,

A 7800GTX comes in just over budget from eBay or a second hand 7900GT (might a be a bit cheaper).

If you can dig deep and find another £35, you can have a 7900GTO, which is awesome for the price.

    kalniel,
I'm looking to do an identical upgrade as you and have been dithering for a couple of weeks now.
Tomshardware have still got the 6800GT card on their charts
    http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/graphics/charts.html

Good cards to get at the moment are either the 256MB versions of either X1800XT or X1900XT - both cheap on overclockers and hardly available at all elsewhere.

I have a very flawed plan, that I am going to try and snag an X1950 if/when it gets discounted.
    Cheers

OCuk's command of the English language, or lack of, puts me off from buying there to be honest :/

Anyway.. yeah, looks a nice card, but it is still a bit pricey unfortunately Would a 512mb 7900GS cut the mustard?

I'm not a big fan of the 7900GS...but it would depend what price you could get it for.

I'd agree with chuckskull that the 7900GTO would make a nice solution, if you're able to stretch that budget out just a little

I know.. I love the cooler on that as well. *sigh* £187 is sadly too high - it's a different category really (I know it's only a 'bit' more, but 150 quid is already a bit more than 120 quid which is a 'bit' more than my ideal, but unrealistic budget of 100 ) Maybe I need to wait a bit longer.

Well, the thing is, if you mainly play Oblivian, then maybe you need to think of resizing your budget to fit.

Depends really.. if I couldnt be arsed about blurry scenery, I'd go for a 7900GTO.. or else its the X1900XT..

But 7900GTO does seem a little too tempting considering it does provide close to GTX speeds..
    Me want Ultrabook

Most people have gotten the GTO beyond GTX speeds, with very basic OC'ing.
