    £6-700 on video card+ TFT

    Hi!

I just got my student bursary, and it values at around £900! so im quite a happy chappy!

anyhoo, id sold my 7800GT last month to CEX and have been using an old radeon 7000PCI (really struggling with 2d, 3d is non-existent!), and i am in need of a new monitor and a new graphics card.

i really really hate ATI - because their drivers are crap, and they still have no method of 1:1 pixel mapping - which means if i go ATI route, ill need a nice big (22-ish) tft with native hardware 1:1 pixel mapping, and as i understand, there are not that many of them around.

at this stage in technology, surely it would be silly to go for a monitor that doesnt have hdmi?!

    so my options, im assuming:
    x1900Xt 512 + 24inch monitor of some sort
    7950gx2 + 20inch monitor
wait for 8800GT card + 20 inch monitor?!

currently as i understand the only hdmi monitor is the benq 24inch - very expensive though!

so, what shall i do - considering this will be replacing a radeon 7000 and a 19inch iiyama pro 454a (i love my monitor, only reason for change is reduced power consumption) and for this money i can buy a whole computer (i need a laptop, im a student, or i could go travelling......)?

1900XT (Ebuyer) or 7900GTO (Dabs) with a 24inch is best.

A Dell 2407, or a BenQ one will be good.

surely you're gonna tell us the truth later....

Spending even one hundred pounds on a TFT to save your electric bill must be a fib! It's gottta be. Your old monitor doesn't use THAT much extra...it would take several years to recoup the saving in electricity.

    Be a man...admit you WANT a TFT! It's ok...you're among fellow weirdo's

Tis true - a CRT will use something like 80W verses about 40W for a TFT - with power saving modes the actual difference in costs is hardly anything, and usually matched by an increase in power draw for a new gfx card

What's this about 1:1 pixel mapping? - First I've heard about it.

1:1 pixel mapping or commanly called scaling, allows the monitor to display the image in the games or apps desired resolution with out streaching to the screens native resolution, normally does this by centering the image and adding black boarders, this can be done through software (Nvidia drivers) but dosent work for all makes of monitor therefore it's better if the monitor support 1:1 mapping natively.

I see, thanks. I'm pretty sure you can do this in powerstrip irrespective of drivers.

7900GTO, £180ish. Spend the change on the monitor of your choice. 24inch should well within your price range.

And the card won't be able to keep up with a monior that size, at the res you should be using, asuming you play the lastest games.

Id wait for G80, and then decide. A X1900XT is an awesome card for the price at the moment, but id wait.

well, i hear that teh x1900xts dont do a bad job on 24inch tfts, but i was considering waiting for g80 as performance tends to double between generations, meaning that a single 8800gt (ie not top line - im not paying stupid money) will do the trick........im hoping.

just hope i dont see an amazing deal on a laptop between now and then!

If you want a card NOW I'd get a 7950GX2/X1900XT 512mb...then get a nice 20" monitor from the likes of Dell/Samsung etc

But like smokey said - I'd wait for G80

Couldnt recomend a graphics card at the mo with directx 10 just around the corner, but for a 24" monitor this Ben Q is about the best there is for your needs on sale now for £600-£650. Great review here as well 10/10!

Even some games will struggle to display 1920x1200 (24" widescreen common resolution) with a 1900XTX unless you start turning some eye-candy down.

I doubt a 7900GTO would stand a chance unless you turned AA right down or off......or your happy to regularly dip to 20 (or less) FPS.

The next generation of games will obviously tax this harder.
