Fubared my 9800pro (Any help appreciated)

I managed to destroy my 9800pro.

Basically the fan on it had stopped, hence causing some heating problems. There is a chance that before I had changed my fan things had been damaged.

However everything was fine till I played a demanding 3d game, it was only then that the game would slow down.

So I bought an arctic cooler for my 9800pro. To be honest I made a right hash of removing the old fan, scraping my 9800pro around the screw holes in the process. The fan now works, but it looks like I've destroyed my gfx card.

Now when I play a game I get this:

    [Cant post the picture yet..]

I'm not sure there is much I can do. Sorry I dont have any screenshots of my card, ill try to get them tomorrow.

Anyone think there is anything I can do to fix this or is it a case of time for an upgrade

    Cheers

I'm also a little worried that by having this card which is sort of running on half that it might melt perhaps or who knows what and damage my other hardware.

did you clean the gpu and reapply thermal paste ??
if you did place the card flat on a newspaper and press down firmly to seat the heat sink
    try it again

Yeah I did do that, the paste came with the fan.

The fan I have is deffo for the 9800pro, but to be honest a little part of it seems to be pushing down on a little square metal thing. Also it was about 1 mm out of sliding perfect into the card and I had to slightly bend the metal rods of the arctic fan.

    Happend to me too,

The 9800 pro does not like new coolers, when I installed my Artic Cooler, although it was quiet, it would not work in 3d and demanding games.

I reccomend putting the stock heatsink back on and putting a 80/92mm fan under it.

    See if that works.

I had a 3rd party cooler on my 9800pro, worked fine. You just have to make sure proper contact is being made.

Anyway, you may very well be correct in thinking that your card has been permanently damaged. If the new heatsink/fan is attached properly, and seems to be working, well it's time for a new card.

clean up the gpu and reapply the correct amount of paste(two grains of rice and prespread it over gpu with a credit card),before puting the retaining clips in ,rotate and press the heatsink home to make sure it is contacting the gpu to remove the heat,my 9700 pro looked just like that until the heatsink was seated properly
dont be scared to press but do it on a surface that wont damage the underside of the card ,like a newspaper
dont forget to wear a static wristband

If it wasnt making full contact, would it be causing these problems? I mean if I didnt have a heatsink at all, would there be strange things appearing when Im running windows for example. The card surely would not be overheating just with windows.

no heatsink at all would crack the core.
    have another look.
