The inquirer are reporting that ms plan to release direct x 9L which will effectively be DX10 on windows xp....
They don't have many details about which graphics cards would be compatible and as always anything the inquirer report should be taken with a pinch of salt as it's often based on rumour.

hehe, it's amazing how fast they change their news stories sometimes. can't believe anything they say until someone else verifies it.

So let me see.... have I got this right....
If I want to run DirectX 10, I will have to run Vista?? and so as I am not willing to fork out great wads of dosh for a new OS until it is well proven and stable (i.e. post SP1), plus I run XP Pro on 5 machines on a domain with SBS 2003 server, so I will be sticking with XP Pro for at least another year... and probably a lot longer, .... so there is no point is waiting for or buying a new DX10 card when they launch, and I should stick with a DX9 card.... X1950XTX, the prices of which will tumble even more on the launch of the new Uber DX 10 cards??

Except the new DirectX 10 cards are also meant to be faster for DX9 than current generation cards as well.
Thanks Kalniel, so it might still be worthwhile cetting a new DX10 card... I will not be buying 'til Christmas time (or maybe just after might be better price-wise), so I can wait and see, but at least I understand now - I had not realised DX10 was Vista only.....
.... I bet there are a lot like me who did not know no DX10 for XP!
I'm not convinced that the first DX10 cards will be worth buying.
How often is the first of anything in this market much good, especially on a bang for buck basis?

The main problem I see is new games designed for dx10 almost definatly wont work with dx9?
Well there's currently only one game out that's designed for DX10, MS flight sim X, and that works really well with DX9.
Game publishers want to sell games. They aren't going to restrict their games to be Vista-only unless they're Microsoft. So I think you can rest assured that there will be little or no requirement for Vista and DX10 for the next year at least, and probably longer.
From what I've read, the major advantage of DX10 that we'll actually see onscreen is that it'll allow busier environments. The streamlined coding model will give an fps boost, but then we know that cards will always be getting faster. But the first DX10 card from nvidia looks like it's little more than a proof-of-concept put out just to get the news stories.
Exactly. There'll be no quantum leap in the first cards to get launched. Just the regular 6 month FPS increase. But I bet the price gets hiked beyond that. I'll wait until the DX10 GTO equivalent comes out...Quote:

Seems kind of strange as I know a lot of people who are quite happy to play a game with settings turned to low or off so that they can enjoy the game over the eye candy.
