    Best PCI card

Right... I want a PCI card so I can use 3 monitors. The resolution of the monitor the PCI card will drive is 1366*768 (1360*768) via DVI -> HDMI converter.

I can get an ATi 9250 for £29 or an NV FX5200 for £36. I currently have an AGP NV 6800GT and was wondering which of the 2 cards would be better regarding price, performance and driver compatibility issues.

    Thanks HeXites

Broad range of people and all that

The PCI FX5200 is a silly price and I can't find any for sale second hand anywhere.

    Hi there,

Try Ebay if you're after a second hand one. Just had a quick look - loads of PCI cards up for grabs including FX5200 and FX5500 with DVI connection - be careful though, a lot of people get confused between PCI and PCI-express, so a lot of the cards in the PCI section are in fact PCI-E. Consequently you can also get a bargain on PCI-E cards in that section!

    Cheers

I've done what you are trying to achieve, (run three monitors, two dvi, one vga) and I have used a range of cards. I first had an AGP fx5950 ultra with a pci fx5200. I just installed the nvidia drivers once, and picked up both cards in one go. Never had any problems after that.

Also used the same AGP fx5950 ultra with a pci 6200 card, (yes these do exist). And from what I understand these are the most powerful pci cards available, I could be wrong though. Again since they were both nvidia cards I had no clashing of drivers or software.

The advice I was given before I attempted the above was to keep the make of graphics cards the same, so if agp/pci-e is ATI, stick with an ATI pci card and vice versa. I haven't mixed or matched graphic cards manufacturers so I can't be of any help in that field.

The 5500 is just a re-badged 5200. The 5200 got a bad name because boards tended to have 64 bit memory, I think with 5500 you get guaranteed 128 bit memory as well as a tad higher clock.

    Most 5500s are AGP.
