    Catalyst Drivers.....

    ...it MUST be them

I got my new Truepower 430 W in and STILL lock ups.

    Asus A7N8X latest BIOS.
XP2500 @ default everything. (do they undervolt by accident?)
2x512 Twinmos PC2700 at 7-3-3- 2.5 cos that normal too
Took two of my SCSI drives out to restrict hassle
Took both SCSI burner off AND EIDE DVD drive.
XP Pro is patched to the top.

Case fans x3 but took side off too to be sure.
BIOS set to Optimal, and default volts for cpu and mem, and Sideband off on AGP.....dunno what Spread Spectrum is, so left it at .5%

Big cooler, temps reading fine ....and I can play for 4 hours some day with it at 2800 and 6-2-2-2 and Aggressive CPU interface, with 3 SCSI drives etc....

BUT...*getting angry now* when I play IL-2 sometimes, normally when banking RIGHT (whats THAT ABOUT) it locks in the screen.

I have tried 2 different sound cards.....Audigy and now Revolution 7.1
Have got TWO CARDS.....9800Pro and now a 9600Pro just to try...they are both default speeds. Both do the same.

    So I ran 3dMark 2001 on a loop last night....15 times...

and it froze after 8 minutes....side off, cool enough..

I held down the power button, 6 seconds..it rebooted and Windows error message was "Your Radeon let you down again bud, send the report?" or similar.

These are Cat 3.9's WITH GPU recovery OFF....

I have tried 3.5's but the screen shot doesnt work in Il2 ..just pure blue screen

    What Cat's are best?

HELP please.......I mean.....£80 power supply and ANOTHER TOP BRAND VID CARD to experiment with...what more must I spend for stability?

    I'm going to cry

Same Crash with different cards?. Something sounds like its up on a software level at the side of things, out of interest you tried re-installing Direct X 9?.

latest version of this?, What setting you got on for Hardware acceleration on your GFX cards?.

Have you tried the obvious steps of memtest86 and prime 95 to rule out any problems with your memory / CPU? Also - I don't think it is your PSU but when you run prime 95 use MBM or equivalent to monitor your voltages. If your mem and CPU check out OK I'd be inclined to agree with TiG. Do you have a spare HDD that you can use as your boot drive? Unplug everything apart from the boot drive and GFX card and do a clean install of the OS, DX9, drivers and the game, don't overclock anything and see if the same thing happens.

Disable spread spectrum by the way - as I understand it it's just there to reduce EMI. Just in case (shouldn't make any difference) set your AGP bus at 66MHz instead of auto (assuming you haven't done so already). Also check the fastwrites / sideband status in the actual drivers not just the BIOS.

TiG..Hardware acceleration is max....but I thought the whole WORLD had it set to max. Its lockingIL-2 (as it did when you visited) on both cards, and I use OpenGL for that game

3dMark is obviously DX so I shall try reinstalling DX9 but as it plays fine somedays and not others....

maybe its a driver issue but maybe my mobo undervolts. Its only a guess. Its ax XP2500+ and BIOS sets it to 1.65 default.

Memtest is a good plan.....very good in deed...I have that on floppy at home..shall boot off that later and try.

    Spread Spectrum....radioactive AGP slot ? nice !

    Shall disable again....

I will try a diff set of Dets after the Mem test I think.

No point doing a re-install.....it did this before the LAST reinstall....its why I did it.

    Cheers people......on we go.

try the omega 3.7 drivers, they have some compatabilty fixes and stuff...
try it with fastwrites off sideband off, if that dotn help try it with fastwrites on (read omega readme it expains about that)
    www.omegacorner.com

what makes you think its the vid card anyway?
touch the mem or memsinks if you have them and see how hot they are after a while playing
ty underclocking the gpu by 75mhz and see if it stops, the heatinsk is probly not seated well enuf.. 75mhz probly wont affect performace much if atall on IL2 so u might want to leave it at that if it fixes..

Ghost it as it stands (i.e. create an image of the current installation as a backup) - remove your sound cards, and any other devices you can afford to for testing, and use the onboard (for the time being) ...

Reinstall winXP and use absolute minimum set of drivers to get you going (latest versions all) - see if that's stable.

If it isn't stable - you can rule out software (pretty much) and start looking at swapping out memory etc...

If it is stable - start adding drivers/software and devices until things start to mess up (by adding one at a time and testing).

hmm, You using BB prolly, do you have a USB modem, USB mouse?

Go to Device Manager > USB Root hubs [right click > properties] > "Power Management" should be there.

Theres going to be an option in there to "allow the computer to turn this device off to save power" < take the tick out.
It causes a lot of crashing of PC's on custs PCs that come through to me.

Do that for PCI NICS, USB mouse, USB modem and each USB root hub in the device manager.

I was having a problem similar to your mate, but didn't lock up just caused the comp to restart, i'd just finished building it , first thing i did was try lowering hardware acceleration that didn't work then i diabled write combining then i went in to bios and disabled agp spectrum that seemed to work , put everything else back to normal and it's been stable as a rock, might be worth looking in to.

    Zak, Don't fret.

I had exactly the same problem as you, actually quite a few people have been having problems with the Cat 3.9 drivers during games.

I downloaded the "CoD" fix from ATI's site, which are essentially just cat 3.10 betas, although it was only for CoD it seemed to stop the whole "crashing problem" I was encountering with ALL of my games.

Zak33 just do what it says, see if it sorts the problem.

If it doesn't have you really lost anything?
