Am I missing something? Today's games don't look that much better than Far Cry which was released in 2004.
Any thing I should play to test out my X1950XT? So far not that impressed!

Far Cry was very good, the only thing I can think of that looks better to me is Oblivion.
IMO, Oblivion is the most unimpressive graphics game that I have played in a long time... Of course some games are worst, but the draw distance, as well as the aliasing is rediculous in places...

I must admit I am impressed with the outdoor scenes in Oblivion, when you're looking into the distance. Up close it's not that great though.
The scenery's gorgeous in Oblivion, but some of the textures directly in front of you (eg a sword) leave a lot to be desired.
real life?
try this - turn computer off, go outside! wow, like compute graphics only much better!
Powered by Marmite and Wet Dog
Light Over Water Photography
Then turn on anti-aliasing and push the draw distance back
It's all configurable - Oblivion now looks fantastic on my computer
(following is from when I had a 6800gt, so not even as good as it looks now)
Gothic 3 also looks fab - especially if you're concerned about the cell object loading in Oblivion as it's not as noticable here.
NWN2 has moments of looking gorgeous, especially sunrises and sunsets when the shadows are creeping out long accross the ground.
All three look better than far cry IMO (certainly Ob and G3), though far cry has lasted quite a long time with the engine enhancements in the patches.

Far cry was already *too* realistic for my liking. Blowing away a guard up close made me feel a tad icky, and was not something I would like my 4yr old to see.
As a latecomer to World of Warcraft I am having a hoot on that running around right-clicking on things, despite the graphics being rather dated.
The movement in game graphics should have improved a far deal by now, but you have to remember that developing new engines is far too costly, and also, it is actually quite difficult to do so when you consider that they can't really predict what type of hardware will be out in the future.![]()
I believe that while Far Cry looked good, in no way did it look realistic. I think that Half Life 2 has the best textures of any game out there, whilst FEAR also scores well on this front. Oblivion can look good when outdoors but it is pretty average when indoors.

HL2 with the fakefactory cinematic mod, textres look great! STILL the best looking game in my opinion(until crysis comes out of course!)
