Thoeretical display system. Possible?

We were speaking about Microsoft Project in the office this morning. Most of our projects are really long and linear, not a lot of concurrent tasks.

Someone asked if it was possible to get more on screen at the same time. I suggested i could build an uber system with 3x 30" monitors for a laugh.

Well, i got thinking and went to spec it out and ran into a problem.

The Dell 30" panels run at 2560x1600. I looked at Matrox cards because they are renowned for their multi monitor setups, but i can't find anything that can drive a resolution that high, yet alone three of them.

What card will cope with these panels? Would i need three individual PCI-E cards?

Would the nVidia software let me treat all monotors as one continuous desktop, letting me expand Project out to 7680x1600?

As i said this is just a theoretical system, but if i can price it all up i'll still submit it as an idea :mrgreen:

Looks like the Matrox Parhelia DL256 will do this, actually has the Apple 30" as a compatible monitor. Going to be pricey though, and will need a board with 3x PCI or PCI-X slots. oh shame :)

Splits one big old resolution across 3 or more monitors depending on which one you buy

Support for 1920 x 480, 2400 x 600, 3072 x 768 or 3840 x 1024 resolution

You only need one card to pump out the resolution at the required size I believe and the box does the rest :)

2 x PCI-E Dual DVI Graphics cards able to support 2560x1600 (not in SLI) is maybe an option? :)

I'm sure the acting head of the comp sci department here (at St Andrews) has 3 30" Apple cinema screens.

I priced a system using 3x Parhelia HR cards, a Tyan Opteron board with 4x PCI-X slots etc. Would be about £5k.

I did manage to spec a system the other night using two Palit 7900GS cards as they have 2x DualLink DVI ports, so in theory you could have 4x 30" monitors creating a desktop 10,240 x 1,600. Thats almost 8x the resolution of a full 1080p HD stream :D

(10240*1600/1920*1080=7.901)

Got the shopping basket up to £4200 + VAT incuding all the software. But I could knock almost £300 off that by using today only offers :)

The ASUS P5W64 WS Professional has four PCIE x 16Graphics slots, and reportedly overclocks as well as or even better than the P5B.

You can't use 4 monitors with SLi It doesn't support it as far as I know. But I do knwo there is an nvidia quadro card that support 4 monitors. (only has 2 dvi ports so you need a splitter)

But SLI isn't being used at all. If i built were to use a system like this, no gaming would be done, so i really couldn't care less about 3D performance :)

ah so they work independently when not set to sli.. never even thought of trying ti that way round lol

Yup, SLI was not in the equasion as I read it, this is the sort of board that would be used for instance to build a Dealer system in financial places, or maybe for multi-screen flight sims

The WS 64 board with 3 dual-link gfx cards will do the job. Can be done very cheaply, except for the price of the screens of course ;)

I think virtually any modern graphics card will run 2560x1600? Some review sites regularly do benchmarks at that resolution.
