7600GT - Giving me poor framerates.

    Hello there.

Before I go off I'll give you my specs

    Intel Pentium 4 Prescott 3.00GHz - 2MB cache
    1GB Ram
    160GB HDD
500W Power X PSU (Cheap thing)

I upgraded from a 6600GT to a 7600GT, obviously... I upgraded because I wanted better frame rates... This is not happening... In CSS I'm getting exactly the same frame rates as my 6600GT, and low and high settings dont have an increase/decrease in FPS... The FPS stays around 30FPS with my 7600GT... And I think this is wrong tbh... This is 30FPS on low settings btw! This happens on all the games I play... Like WoW etc...

Do you think I could do with buying a better quality PSU?

    Thanks in advance.

does the 7600GT have a pci-e power connector, if yes, is it plugged in?

    and what resolution is this?

What resolution is your screen displaying at?

Having the best graphics card in the world but a poor resolution will lead to your cpu doing more work and bottlenecking, since the gpu wont be doing as much.

Hello guys thanks for your replys.

The 7600GT is AGP btw, and yes the molex is plugged in correctly.

I run CSS at 1024 X 768... Can't remember if I ran it at a higher res... I'm getting a new PSU tommorow and I'm going to test it... If the PSU doesn't fix it what could my possible solutions be?

    Thanks!

Wow dude you should be looked for 60+ Frames on high settings. Im running a much lower spec card (ATM!) and getting 40-50 on mid settings.

Have you got latest drivers ect? if not maybe the new PSU will give it some more juice.

Also make sure you have the AGP driver for your motherboard installed.
This of course should have been there before, but would certainly explain low frame rates with both AGP cards.
The 3Ghz P4 should be sufficient for most games, don't worry about that. Also forget about the PSU, as if your computer isnt re-booting or crashing, it is working fine. A new PSU will NOT affect frame rates.

What is the motherboard? If you don't know, download a program called CPU-Z which can tell you more system details.

Edit: Found it (from your 'My System' specs). Download all your drivers (if you need to) from here:
The AGP driver is at this link

I do have all the latest drivers and I'm still only getting about 40 - 50 FPS on CSS... Strange thing is the FPS doesn't change between high and low settings??!

Oh, well that would clearly indicate a bottleneck somewhere in the rest of the system that isnt able to supply the graphics card with enough data. It would be quite easy to shout out "it's the P4" since they aren't the CPUs we all love these days, but truth be told it should not be the bottleneck here.

This might sound pedantic, but i need to get a clear answer from you on this one:
You say that you have "all the latest drivers" but do you have the driver for the AGP slot i pointed out above as well as the nvidia driver for the AGP card?

A 3Ghz P4, 2 Gig of RAM and any sort of halfway modern hard drive out to provide your system with enough general power to show a difference bewteen a 6600GT and 7600GT.

Hmm....tell me more about the specific resolutions you have chosen. Also tell me about what overclocking or other graphics-related utilities/applications you have running.

When I'm playing my games I try and put them in 1280 X 1024 @ 60HZ - Yes Vsync is off!

I do have the AGP driver installed and I do have the graphics card driver installed of course.

    Just tried BF2, medium settings I was getting about 30 - 50 FPS... :\

EDIT : I have NO overclocking done in my system what so ever.

EDIT : I'm also getting 11600 Points on the 3DMARK03 tool... Doesn't this seem about right? If it does seem about right why am I getting terrible frame rates in games?

Okay, over at ASUS the latest AGP driver showing is 1.17e, make sure you have this (or a later version) installed:

    http://support.asus.com/download/dow...odel=P5S800-VM

One other question - its such a no-brainer that I'm embarassed asking, but here goes:

Your motherboard has on-board VGA. Are you connecting the monitor to the gfx card, or the monitor output on the motherboard (next to the USB outputs, etc).

Its a daft question, but needed to be asked as this would certainly account for there being no change in framerates.

I know that, just wondering because my friend has two 6800's in SLI and he was getting terrible framerates. New psu in there are the 6800's were getting the power they needed and frames went up.

That's a fair point, although slightly surprising that he had a working system if it didnt get enough power.

OK, so that seems to have ruled out most of the more obvious issues.

How old is your build of Windows?
When you changed the graphics card, did you uninstall the graphics driver before putting the new card in? I am wondering if somewhere in the driver it still believes you have a 6600GT.

Maybe his computer is simply not using his 7600GT?

Maybe it is still using the 6600?

    Hello guys.

Just to answer a few questions... I am plugging my monitor into my graphics card lol.

I formatted my PC, therefore all the drivers went off my PC, and I did a fresh install with all the drivers etc, and it's still the same.

I really don't know how old my version of windows is.

But I've being told else where that 11600 points in 3dmark03 is about right for my computer, if this is right what would explain the wierd problem with FPS?

    Thanks.

    Hi guys.

Just done a CSS stress test all settings on high and it says I'm getting an average of 97FPS in the stress test...a person I know reported the same values... And he has same GFx card as me and very similar CPU!

This is crazy... Maybe 30 - 50 FPS actually is the correct FPS for my computer? :/
