    Graphics upgrades! Maybe...

    Now then people.

Do I upgrade my graphics? Hmmm, here's the score:

My rig at the mo is an Opteron 165@2.57Ghz, 1.5Mb RAM, 20.1" TFT, 17" TFT and an XFX 6800GS XXX. OH, in an ASUS SLI-32SE board or whatever it's called.

    Do I...

Get another 6800GS (maybe £80 on ebay)?
Sell my 6800GS and get a couple of silent 512Mb 7600GSs (about £160)?
Go for something different? (like maybe this: http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=468674)

I've got an Xclio 400W PSU too...would that need beefing up? Got a DVD writer, DVD ROM, 2 x SATA hard drives and a few USB things.

    Thanks

    Tim

Xclio im suprised that hasnt blown up already
Are you a serious gamer? or is your single 6800 struggling to play what you want?

If you arent struggling alot then i would get another 6800 for SLI.
I wouldnt get the 7950 as its near £200 and for an extra (£60 on scans today only) you could have a 8800GTS.

Now I've got my 20.1" screen I'm running games at a higher res and I can't have them on max settings as I like. I'm not bothered about 200+ framerates, just something steady over 60.

I'm also thinking about Vista, C&C3, etc.

Would it be worth getting another 6800GS? isn't the technology 'old' now?

I wouldnt say old old technology but it certainly isnt new.
If you wanna go the full blow then get a 8800.

My advice would be, get another 6800 or get a 8800 nothing else. If your games benefit from SLI then perhaps another 6800 would be inorder but if your games arent SLI optimized then a 8800 would be best.

Or on the insane side, 2 8800's in SLI!!

I've got BF2, FEAR, HL2, Generals, SWAT4 and will be getting some of the more recent good games in the sales.

seriously, dont bother with another 6800 - you are not going to get 100% improvement, so if i was you, id just plump for any of the 8800 - gts or gtx.

i understand dabs have an msi one for 399.99 , which is the cheapest one, although check out the warranties before.

Or Scan has one on Today only for cheap.
If you are thinking about Vista get the DX10 GPU.

well.. if R6Vegas (Unreal 3 engine) is anything to go by, I can safely say my X1800XT is already a pile of crap..

I would have guessed that 2x6800GS will be no better..

so yea, 8800 or just wait up for the R600 series..
    Me want Ultrabook

I've heard the 8800 series will be coming down in price Q1 '07 for some reason I can't recall.

Should I hang on a bit?

    EDIT: what about this?
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=492012
seems rather cheap to me when I've had a browse round price comparison sites

Start with a new system from intel with some nice ddr2 and an e6600. A 8800gts wouldnt look out of place either. Get rid of that museum piece you are running and start again.

I can't afford to start from scratch on this. I'm happy with my Opteron at nearly FX-60 speed.

Just looking at the graphics and maybe ram at the moment.

i'd get a new psu as well if I were you

a 7600GS would not be a step forward imo.

That 7950GX2 is good for the price. the only problem is if a game doesnt have an SLI profile

I'll look at a new PSU. maybe something modular?

What would happen if the game didn't have an SLI profile? I'm behind on this SLI setup. Haven't used it since my Voodoo 2s and it didn't need any configuring back then
