I'm thinking about buying one of these today as a TV and monitor. I know the resolution (1366 x 768) isn't as high as an equivalent sized dedicated monitor, but was wondering what people thought about using the TV like this.

It should be fine, i have my 32" hooked up and i can use it for stuff. The low res would be a pain tho.
Also untill i installed MCE (and i suppose the MCE ATI drivers) I could not use the correct res for the screen.

i use my 32" samsung with my mce htpc.
i use it all the time for looking around the internet in the living room, in fact i am using it now to post this!![]()
I use mine as a secondary monitor (usually for playing games) and it's fine..
no no no no no no no

that screen has a 0.4215mm dot pitch (i.e. the size of each pixel is about half a milimetre)
if you want to decide if that's okay, try this simple test: a 19" lcd monitor is 409.243982mm viewable horizontally, so try using one day-to-day with the resolution set to as near to 971x607 as you can get
if you say what monitor you have currently, i can give accurate figures for you to compare against
It would be a primary monitor as I want to stick it in the corner of my room where the desktop is now. To be honest, I use the desktop much less than the laptop; just seems like a convenient solution.
How do you guys find the TV performance (26" preferably)?
I have a Hansol 910A 19" that I use at 1280 x 1024Originally Posted by directhex
then i guessed well.
get it running as close to 971 x 607 as you can - that will give you the same "definition" as you'd get with a 26" tv - just a bit less desktop space (about 50% less)
and before someone calls me on it, i know it's not ideal due to interpolating and non-native lcd resolutions. it's till going to give an idea of the desktop size/space
what a simple way to prove a point
It is Inevitable.....
Anyway, for us less technically minded bods, the TV works fine!
It looks fine to me as a monitor too. Mine's a secondary, I have a 22" Iiyama as my main one but I could quite happily use the Samsung as a single monitor if I didn't have the other.. I'm planning on getting a big arsed 30" Dell or 26" NEC in the not too distant though.. I got the Samsung as a secondary and ran a media centre PC on it for a while and that looked good to me too.
YMMV of course.
same here my usual monitor is a 20" synchmaster but i use my 32" inch samsung as my living room monitor.
and although on paper it sounds as though it would be rubbish, and to be honest i was not expecting great results, but it really is quite good and if i was pushed i really could use it as an everyday monitor!
Can't see it working for me, could always buy the 32" as a main telly.
i dont know if it makes much of a difference but the samsung hdtv's support 1:1 pixel mapping over vga!
for more info you could check out http://www.avforums.com/forums/index.php they might have some answers for you!
here is a picture of mine i took about 5 mins ago...

not quite. they support 1360x768 over vga, but the panel is 1366x768, leading to a slight horizontal stretch
i never said it couldn't display things.here is a picture of mine i took about 5 mins ago...
i said it had the same dot pitch as a 19" crt at 800x600 (which is true)
your image only goes to show that - and it's very uncomfortable using a screen that large at a point-blank range on a such a low resolution
